How can I have plants in containers for months and then look at the bare twigs in January and not have a clue what the plants are. It happens every year. Do I learn? - no😐

Nope :)  It's up and down a lot. Today hasn't been too bad but I felt terrible yesterday and I'm exhausted all the time. The kid are back in school on Monday so it'll be back to early starts everyday and that's going to be a struggle. January is feeling like a real slog already.

It's stopped here now @wild edges, so I might get a walk without being soaked. I'm too old for that game, and the newest shoes need waterproofing, which I keep forgetting to do...
My coat isn't drying out between walks anymore. My boots are staying dry though at least. I've been trying this beeswax stuff on them and touch wood it's really keeping the water out. I've been ankle deep a few times this week and nothing has managed to sneak in.

  • I can vouch for the Beeswax - works well for me :)

I use the Grangers wax @wild edges, which is quite good, and I do the Goretex bits with it too. I actually did my shoes yesterday. I think people believe that shoes/boots stay waterproof for the entire life of the footwear. They don't.
I keep my old boots for the worst days, but most of the time I just try and avoid the wettest areas if I have my shoes on.
I bought a cheaper pair because the soles wear out anyway - none of them last a full year for me. A good going over with the hairdryer helps disperse the wax too. I sometimes do a double layer too.
I have several jackets, so it's a case of swapping them over. What make of jacket are you using?

This is weird. Most of the houses in the village have had electric power at half strength for the past hour. The TV works but all lights are dim and flickering. However a few houses, randomly distributed, are scarcely affected at all. Western Power say they anticipate full power being restored at 8.30 pm. Hmm, we’ll see.

And then you stop and think what a piffling, minor inconvenience this is. Pity the poor people in Ukraine,

Has it come back, @BenCotto? Sounds like a transformer somewhere in the village has failed

Thank you, Raisingirl, yes at around 8.50. 171 houses lost power - us, a neighbouring village, and a bit of Uppingham.

5 minutes later - National Grid has just called to check we’re all right and power is back on. I’m impressed by that.
