Think the news rooms all over the country are celebrating being able to report something positive and cheerful … can’t remember the last time … even the jubilee was tainted by Andrew, Megxit and HM’s health alarums. 🙄
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Driving home this afternoon and watched a cyclist some way ahead of me. Every time a car came up behind him he swung out towards the centre of the road. When there wasn't a car near him he was much closer to the side. If either he, or the approaching car, had misjudged he would have been flattened.
News is News and altho the definition seems to have changed somewhat. it doesn't have to be either positive or cheerful - it's what's happening in the world whether good or bad. The Queen's Jubilee was hardly "news" - anyone interested in the Royal Family would have been well aware of it. Yes, the Queen's health will count as news but not the rest of the rubbish. The only other news anyone needs to be made aware of on that score will be her death and the subsequent crowning of Charles. Same with a lot of the Sport coverage - it's literally everywhere on several channels - hardly necessary for a national news bulletin to rabbit on about it as the first item. The " feel good " stuff has it's place of course but either further down the agenda or on a separate item altogether. It's good for people to be cheered up by all sorts of stories but most of those televised as news simply aren't. Treat news and feel good stories differently unless the 2 are related - shouldn't be that difficult.
I do wonder where news editors are as their choices seem bizarre to me. Sports are definitely a back page/end of newscast topic.
As for UK obesity, it's a trend that started in the USA and has spread eastwards along with their fast food franchises. It's affecting France and Belgium too. Part of the problem is people being unable or unwilling to cook and not knowing about nutrition and portion sizes. Restaurant portions here remain sensible tho and we don't frequent fast foods or take-aways.
My grump? OH left the keys in the ignition the other day and Sally Zafira's battery ran dry. Couldn't jump start her so called in the cavalry who managed to get her going and OH took her for a run to charge up.
Next day, same problem so OH went to Luçon to get a serious battery charger machine which promptly beeped and said battery defective. Chappy in the next village who supplied it is on hols till next week. Isn't it just typical that such things happen in summer when half the world is on hols? It'll be worse next month.

Obelixx, it seems that if some, if not all, car batteries don’t survive running completely flat. Something terminal happens to the electrolytes or plates inside the battery, and they won’t hold a charge any more. We had this problem with our second car during lockdown, didn’t get used for too long and the battery went flat. Tried charging it and managed to get it to start, but wouldn’t hold its charge and we had to buy a replacement.
Re the tv news programmes, we stopped watching a few years ago. The presenters kept referring to ‘tonight’s top story’. We decided that there was too much emphasis on what the editors had decided was of important for us to be told, and too much opinion. Smacked rather of censorship and propaganda than unbiased reporting. I loved the story about the early BBC radio broadcast, where the presenter announced that there was no news that day, so they were going to play some classical music instead!
