Hmm 🤔 my ex was a parish councillor for several years … he and the other councillors gave up a lot of their own time and worked hard for our small community … ensuring roads and pavements were safe, bins collected, streets swept, making decisions about whether to have more street lights or not … advising the District councillors and Planning bods on housing needs in the area, lobbying for more land to be available for allotments, all sorts of stuff … none of which gave the opportunity for personal gain or glorification and occasionally finding themselves on the receiving end of unwarranted personal abuse from people who didn’t believe that anyone did such things for their community from a sense of duty.

People who are interested in what parish councils do can check out the minutes of their own parish council meetings each month online … and if you find that sort of thing interesting, and you're willing to give up a fair bit of your free time you can stand at the next parish council election.

Do they have control of any money? Not much point in deciding what needs to be done if someone else holds the purse strings.

@Dovefromabove ..which I did for a couple of years. But having an engineering degree disqualifies me in the eyes of the local puffed up interfering busybody with his own agenda. It's fine when the councillors are working together to help the community. But when you get one intent on disrupting and filibustering, you quickly think 'I've got better things to do' and go and do them

@B3 They have control of the Parish precept - usually about 50p per person in the parish. Enough to do some good if spent wisely

That’s a shame @raisingirl … our community was one where most people knew each other at least a bit  … puffed up interfering busybodies were easily identified and not elected.

Oh, and the decision they took about more streetlights? they decided no more were needed … they were aware of light pollution even back in the 80s.

Has anybody not seen this?  An example of the very worst of parish council meetings?  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsBBGVi2MCw

My iPad flicks between standard and snug size. Fortunately I can see the smallest of print so personally I’m not inconvenienced.

Have you powered the iPad off, leave it for at least 5 minutes then turn back on.
