I'm itching for my NDN newbie gardener to try Bonica. I think it would be perfect. A blank slate garden. I've suggested it (when she asked for recomms). I will now practice keeping my mouth shut.
Bonica in a pot, well that's ok for a limited period, like most other things.. it's always down to maintenance isn't it.. so I wish them luck with that.. I just think that roses in pots should be the most scented types, because we're always inclined to sniff them more..
This white rose only
flowers once, but I was very impressed with it in the first year,
from a bare root planting. I was surprised by the amount of blooms
I got from it... one of those classic old roses with a green button
eye, some quartered blooms, some more ruffled and fluffy, a fine damask scent and clean foliage... rain
resistance seemed very good.
The bloom season was
short, just over 3 weeks, I might get a little more on a mature bush
but that's it with summer flowering roses... the advantage is that we
don't have to fuss about them when flowering is over, and they can
form a nice background shrub.. This one is quite shapely and
upright..
Occasionally there are
hints of pink in the bloom..
This rose is sometimes
compared favourably to the better known 'Mme. Hardy', and from what
I've seen of both, I prefer this one, it's more compact, better
suited to smaller gardens...
..these photos are in sequence..
..tomorrow... two highly fragrant Hybrid Tea roses suitable for pots... 'Chandos Beauty' and 'Chartreuse de Parme'..
I rather like that one @Marlorena, thanks for the photos, interesting to see the development over time. Looking forward to seeing Chandos Beauty in particular tomorrow.
I admit, I do not often
grow these types of roses but I think for pots on the patio, we
should consider the most scented, large flowered roses..
These 2 fit the bill,
amongst many others.. but I found them not only strongly fragrant,
quite deliciously so, but pretty good for health too..
'Chandos Beauty'..
[Harkness, UK 2005] … Hybrid Tea about 3 foot, higher if lightly
pruned..
This has one long flush
which seems to go on forever, then a short gap while it regenerates
for the next flush, but I would say the subsequent flushes are as good as the first, but this is such a charming rose with
immense beauty of form, that just a few blooms make it worthwhile..
Large glossy foliage, not too thorny.. the scent is sweet and fruity
and enough to impress anybody..
'Chartreuse de
Parme'... [Delbard, France 1996]... ['Yves Piaget' x 'Nuit d'Orient]
Hybrid Tea, about 3
feet...
The scent on this rose
is simply sensational, and I bought it at first sniffing, so to
speak... one of the strongest in roses of any sort, very sweet,
intoxicating... some people will say it's overrated, but that was not
my experience..
As a rose shrub I would
like to have seen a few more blooms on it, it was a little slow to
produce new flowers, but when they arrive they are large and deep
pink, and very full.. the foliage is large and glossy..
This rose could 'wow'
anyone with its scent.. that's all I can say.. I only have 2
pictures..
I looked as this but was very undecided on colour. Peter Beale describe it as Peach / Apricot, Trevor White as Shell Pink I'd say @Marlorena 's photos have both covered. Incidentally, I see that TW are withdrawing CB this year
Not pink, most of those photos on the link look like my rose... I would describe it as buff coloured with a peach/apricot centre, which sometimes can turn blush or shell pink as per TW.. I'm surprised they're discontinuing it..
