@pandakoalagirl49lS9c8QR_ I missed your post earlier, just to say thanks and I'm delighted you're getting 'Armada', I love this rose.. and you'll love Chandos too, the scent is divine..
@owd potter ..thank you.. I'll be over on yours soon I expect..
@Nollie @bullfinch ..thanks again !.. yeah, my neighbours are good, some like roses, and others like.. erm.. artificial grass.. but I don't blame them really, as one gets older..
must admit that I started opening this thread first to check out 'rose of the day' before the general rose thread.. thank you for the story behind the roses and for inspiring many others like me...
It's been a very enjoyable thread. Thanks for taking the time to do it. I'll look out for some of these. I'm a wildlife gardener, in particular for birds, and will now only plant single or semi double roses.....I particularly like A Mid-summer Nights Dream and Kew Gardens and will look out for these.
Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.
Thank you @Marlorena for this lovely thread, I’ve so enjoyed reading it. I have just ordered Frilly Cuff half price from PB after your review inspired me. I’m hoping it grows as well as yours has.
'Zephirine Drouhin'...
[Bizot, France 1868]... Bourbon climber, thornless..
There are 2 other colour variants available of this rose.. 'Kathleen Harrop', which I now have, and 'Martha'..
It's been said that if
this rose was not thorn free, it would probably have disappeared from
cultivation a long time ago, but it's still very much with us,
despite over propagation it still retains a fair degree of vigour,
although I suspect it's true that it may not be quite the rose it
was... it can take several years to really get going, and it can be
5 years or more before you start to see the best of it..
It has a reputation for
black spot and mildew. I didn't see too much of that on my plant
until August, and by then it does not trouble me. It's also claimed
to be strongly scented, but not quite to my nose, I have many other
roses much better in this department..
Still, it put on a
great show for about 6 weeks from late May to mid July, tapering off
into August, at which time some disease issues set in, but it will
continue to produce a few flowers here and there until quite late..
the blooms are double, but not always the fullest, and of a bubble
gum pink colour.
On a fence, my plant
was trained at about 6-8 feet tall by 8-10 feet across.. it does
actually have an occasional thorn..
When in full bloom it's quite photogenic, and for those few weeks I was in awe of it..
..well that was fun to do, thanks again for looking in..
