  • @pansyface I always listen out for Ardnamurchan Point on the Shipping Forecast.  I rented a cottage there once in the early '70's.  I managed the pronunciation to the satisfaction of the locals but my abiding memory was falling over backwards into water whilst photographing the nearby heronry.

Another confusing one is Chedzoy in Somerset - correct pronunciation is Chedzee.

There's an American presenter on my favourite radio station. When he first started doing the afternoon programme and had to read out the traffic news, he made a complete hash of Loughborough. It came out as something like "Loogerberrooga".

Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
  • Slaithwaite =   Slawwick

ooh.. so close. Slaithwaite = 'Sloughwit' ... according to the ticket collector on the train.

My cousin lived in Slaithwaite for a few years.  Yes, Slawit, unless you were very posh, in which case it was Slathwit.

Interesting, the places with French names pronounced oddly... Northumberland has Cambois, pronounced Cammus.  (And - not French, but odd - Ulgham, pronounced Uffam.)
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
