  • @tui34 I bet you didn't think a thread about aitch would be so popular! And very entertaining

And what about quinoa? I asked the assistant in Tesco where it was and she said they didn't sell it and I said they did because I bought my last lot from there. She asked a passing order putter upper who also said they didn't sell it. I told her how it was spelled and she said oh you mean kwin oh ah. I said no it's pronounced keenwah. She didn't believe me. Oh well.

I've tried to order chorizo when in Spain. Had a go at a few different variants, choreetho, chorritzo, corrizzo. Blank looks. Wrote it on a napkin. "Oh, choreetho!" She obviously wasn't expecting an English person to attempt the local Spanish pronunciation.
I had a similar problem with hot chocolate in a Starbucks in California. I had to order hart charclette to get what I was after.

I suppose we are more familiar with dealing with a variety of accents here or maybe it's just that some of us are willing to make the effort.
The quinoa thing is poor staff training. You can't expect them to keep up with the latest good fads, let alone how to pronounce them.

‘Aitch’ - but I live in an area that solely pronounces it ‘haitch’. Even my wife!

If that is the worst of her crimes against marriage,  be grateful. I'm on her side even though I'm an aitcher

@Helios and @B3  - we just hold up our fingers and say "deux"  (for churros or.... !!   @Uff    Only because my brother in the southern hemisphere corrected me for quinoa.  Anyway, if I need to find it in the SM, I just ask where the lentils are!

I'm with the staff on that one.  How do you get keenwah from quinoa.  Pretentious - mais oui.

@KT53  Probably because that's the way it is pronounced in its country of origin. The Andes.

Maybe the real issue is the spelling of quinoa
