We did the same, my sister always bagged the toboggan and I was left with the tin tray. Oh yes, and those Siren suits we wore with our wellies, I have a photo somewhere! I've not liked the snow eversince, I just look at it on the mountains.
... and the funding is to encourage more folk to take part in some/any sort of activity which will keep us reasonably fit and so not increasing the pressure on our wonderful NHS đÂ
Yeah, but skeleton? Sliding down a mountain on a tea tray? I'll accept your argument for cycling or tennis or marathon running, even skiing & snowboarding. But not for bobsleigh or skeleton or the other variations that just use a slightly different shaped tray and different numbers of people on it. I very much doubt anyone watches that and thinks 'I'll give that a go' unless they are already fairly committed athletes
That's my opinion too. Why not set up skateboarding parks, basketball hoops / badminton nets in village halls etc and spread the money about a bit more? How many folk in the whole of the UK have ever "done" skeleton?Â
Unless you have slid down a mountain on a tea tray, you will never know just how exciting it is.
Having done it without a tray a few years ago doc, I have slightly mixed feelings about it. At least they know where they're stopping... Thrilling right enough. My face [and various other parts] didn't think so though Â
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
@WonkyWomble and her brother and all the other kids used to take plastic fertiliser sacks with a bit of straw in and slide down the steep hill at Heveningham Hall (I think they hoped to end in the river but the farmer David usually built a bank of snow and bales to stop that happening) ... they got some amazing speeds. Parents had to be pretty alert to stop them being strangled by sheep netting!
Those olympic sliders usually have to be able to sprint pretty fast ... 100 metre specialists often go 'sideways' to the sliding events. My Bro did the Cresta Run when he was a lot younger ... he said it's the most amazing experience ... addictive ...Â
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Don't they want to encourage folk to do Luge? to most folk the only difference is one faces forwards, one backwards. Bit of a difference in funding eh?
Sorry but I think Hosta is right. The reason skeleton gets millions and luge gets thousands is because historically we've won a load of medals at one and not the other. If skeleton's funding gets cut now, then that will be confirmation. The heaviest investment is in success, not participation.

Basketball and Badminton get not one penny in funding and were told " there isn't a chance of winning a medal" as justification. I'm all for people taking part. Medals aren't what it should all be about.  Getting the maximum number taking part in as wide a range of sporting activity is paramount. Skeleton is just a "vanity project " IMHO"Â
