  • @Obelixx,  I worked on tests for Malaria antibodies in blood donors. The idea was that if there were no detectable antibodies it was safe to let donors return to the panel. We reinstated many donors over the years.

Well, @Allotment Boy, having been roundly rebuffed the once it didn't occur to me to try again.   Now I'm too old and also lived in the UK in the mad cow 80s.

I wanted to give blood (my granny and both parents had done it for years) but after passing out clonk a few hours afterwards every time for the first half a dozen times the docs told me to stop. 😞

At least you tried,  delayed  faints can be quite dodgy.
@Obelixx, not all centres did it, but in South London,  we lost a lot of potential donors to a perceived Malaria risk.

When I first went to donate, I persuaded a reluctant colleague to come along as well. She was extremely miffed when I failed the iron level test and was sent away, while she was deemed fit and healthy and taken off to give her contribution! I donated on and off for years, but it was very much a case of 50% of the time, I was borderline anaemic and turned away, so I eventually gave up.

@Allotment Boy This was Manchester in the early 70s when I was a student.  6 years later when having a small procedure in London that needed a blood test I was told the same thing.  Lovely blood but not acceptable.

Possum's been doing it since she was 18 tho so doing our bit as we can.

  • We didn't start that work till the early to mid 80's. S London & Birmingham were the first 2 centres to do it.

Signs of spring, plant id questions starting to arrive in the threads. I always enjoy these, very pleased with myself when I get one right, and very useful when it’s something Ive been wondering about.

I agree Ergates and I too enjoy learning as much as answering questions.
