Today I went to the hospital to donate my usual pint of rubbish blood to the dustbin of history.
The last time I went, on a Friday at the beginning of December, I left behind a very nice cardigan which, despite several phone calls, nobody could find when I tried to track it down on the following Monday.
I thought it was lost forever and just put it down as yet another expensive Dumbo of the Day moment.
But today, as I sat in my chair waiting for my turn to ooze, a nurse that urrahI’d never seen before came up to me with a plastic bag labelled with an official hospital sticker with my full name and hospital number printed on it. She said “I was told to give you this.”
It was my cardigan.
Before I could ask her how she knew I’d be in today, when and where, and how anybody remembered after three months that there was something with my name on it waiting for me, she’d gone.
Bewildered and very happy all at the same time.
Hurrah, yet another reason to be grateful for the wonderful NHS
I'm very grateful for you donating your blood pansyface. Without such generous people, my husband wouldn't have survived leukaemia and a stem cell transplant when chemo went wrong. Thank you very much.
Good work, Hosta. It must look good there now. I have a continuing battle with ivy in my garden. Today, about to grab a chunk of the stuff and yank it all out, I spotted something purple in amongst the green- a lovely little crocus, battling its way up, showing me that if I look carefully, nature will spring up a little jewel for me to enjoy.
I have never given blood. Was tested and told I had lovely, healthy O- but I've also had malaria so no thanks. OH used to give blood A+ but not acceptable in Belgium or France cos of living with mad cows in the 80s.
Possum O+ gives blood regularly and plasma in between.

I used to give blood many moons ago but because I was so tiny, only allowed to give half a pint at a time. After several years I happened to mention I always had severe bruising on my arm afterwards and was advised to give up. Such a shame. OH was also a blood donor for many years.
I was absolutely devastated when I wasn't to donate blood anymore after I developed high blood pressure. I'm too old now anyway but years down the line it really got to me that I couldn't pay back what my husband was given.
