You too @Dovefromabove. Communications in remote areas - to live - are really poor despite high numbers of visitors likely to get in trouble hiking on high fells in dodgy weather with inadequate clothing and reserves.
Doesn't matter whether it's landline or mobile, the resources are inadequate and have been for decades.Â
I know about the difficulties of communications in rural areas … I’ve lived most of my life on isolated farms or in rural villages… but since we’ve all had landlines in our homes, or neighbours with phones, or a red telephone box on the corner of the lane,  the elderly and/or infirm living at home have always been able to summon help … this will no longer be the case. Â
Even after the great storm of ‘87 when we had no power for at least ten days we were able to contact the emergency services and neighbours on our landlines or those of neighbours.Â
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Every house in our small village had no electricity for 3 days as a result of storm Arwen. The only mobile mast that gives us a service was out for 5 days. Luckily, some of us still had landlines, so could summon help if required. My understanding is that landlines are to be replaced with a service that requires electricity. Seems like a disaster waiting to happen.

Semaphore no good for us,  rarely see the end of the garden for mist or fog.  It’s got to be smoke signals,  that’s if you can find something dry to burn. no mobile signal for us.Â

No wonder you can’t sleep, Hostafan! I shall stick my head in a book ( figuratively speaking, I have a trashy but engaging novel downloaded in my iPad) Might distract my brain.
Morning all, grey, but very mild. Survey today for the solar panels Got to ice the Christmas cake,do some potting on in the green house. Went shopping,I know the old saying about "book and cover", but there was just 2 people, twenty somethings,I thought, the way they are dressed, guy expensive track trousers crutch round his knees, the walk, would bet my pension they wouldn't wear masks, correct.
