My friend and I have both had phone scams lately telling us to top up our Apple Pay accounts, mine popped up just after I'd phoned for a taxi. Neither of us have Apple Pay, not even sure what it is. We've blocked the number.
I've had a couple of e-mails recently telling me my payment of car tax has been rejected due to insufficient funds and to send them details of a different card. As my car is taxed annually in November, I suspect that one isn't genuine.
CLONED NOT HACKED!!! Heads-Up!! Apparently almost every fb account is being cloned. Your picture and your name are used to create a "new" Facebook Account. (They don't need your password to do this). They want your friends to add them to their accounts. Your friends will think that it's you and accept your request. From that point on they can write what they want under your name.
I have NO plans to open a new account!!
PLEASE DO NOT ACCEPT A NEW FRIEND REQUEST FROM ME.
I work in a fraud team (not a team that commits frauds!!!) and come across a variety of scams, some are very clever.
Romance fraud is perhaps the biggest of scams we deal with, where the scammer poses as a soldier/oil rig worker etc and befriends someone who just happens to be lonely or maybe bereaved. They build up conversations over many weeks and then ask for some money to be sent to them due to a sob story, or to get flight tickets to finally come and meet them. These payment requests continue and eventually the victim will have sent them many thousands of ££.
When the victims family/friends report this to us, some of victims still refuse to accept that they are victims even when we explain everything to them. Some of these victims are professional people, who you would never believe would fall for this kind of scam, but they do.
