@Victoria Sponge ..nice selection once again... Belle du Jour looks mighty thorny doesn't it?..
@zugenie .. several members have grown that rose, including me.. it can be grown as a shrub, or climber, so along your fence would be ok too.. it has few thorns..
@fire I like Jason, I was talking to him the other day on youtube about a rose he has in his garden..
Today I sing the praises of Jackson's Nurseries of Staffordshire.. I don't think I've used them before.. I got a good discount on these 5 Imperator 'Red Baron'.. in 3 ltr pots..
@JessicaS - I love Lady Emma Hamilton. My first one had dieback so I wasn't very impressed the first year, but it has bounced back and the replacement that DA sent me did fantastically for a first year rose. One of my best scented.
Also it's only just started dropping its leaves. They've held on for months with lovely autumnal colouring. Yellow, orange, red and plum.
@Mr. Vine Eye oh thats gorgeous! I didnt realise it had such nice Autumn tones too, thank you. Im really looking forward to it, seeing the groups pics on here made me really want it and the bare roots growing happily away in its pot by the looks.
@cooldoc phew! Underplanting is 2 winter / spring pansys in peachy shades and 2 peachy primroses to fill till roses get going. Theres a handful of tete a tete bulbs in there too. Ill move them elsewhere in summer. Edit; these, primrose husky peach schnaps and pansy matrix sunrise (not my pics!) I think (or peach shades forgot which!)
@JessicaS - neither did I! I’m not sure if that’s a feature or just a peculiarity of my own due to it developing new leaves fairly late on.
Ive just spent 40 minutes hunting around through the old rose threads trying to find my before and after pruning photos from last February. Managed to get them in the end.
But quite enjoyed looking through the old posts and discussions actually. It felt very nostalgic.
Also realised that’s it’s almost a year since the whole allotment plot theft business. I still breathe a sigh of relief every time I visit, get in sight of the plot and can see everything’s as I left it!
I feel moved to say, after looking back, a big thank you to everyone on here who was so supportive during that time. I can laugh and joke about it now, but at the time it was very stressful to deal with. This forum was a much needed outlet and many of you, whether you realised it or not, really helped me.
So thank you!
As I’m approaching pruning time, after what’s felt like a long break from the garden, I’m looking forward to another year of roses! Hoping to start a test bed of seed grown roses at the allotment, growing on my young rugosas and tying in my climbers ever higher...and being involved on here too!
Managed to get the new roses in yesterday, and I didn't plan to as I had other stuff on and it was frosty first thing. Also managed to knock a good cane clean off Global Beauty with my trug filled with JI3 .
Global Beauty is also called Candlelight which I rather like and another yellow from same order Our Rose, I noticed is also called Sunny Day. If I remember I'm going to use those names
Yes, @Marlorena BdJ was probably the thorniest beast in the order and I'm glad you said that as I had it closer to the front of border than was probably necessary so when planting I put it closer to the fence. @pitter-patter's BdJ put out an extra long cane in its first year so I thought I would experiment and see if I could use it as a bit of fence cover.
I didn't authorise rain today as I wanted to get out and plant some new perennials so hopefully it picks up later. On the other hand, after a mishap during Storm Arwen where my water tank launched itself against the two largest butts, sheering the taps off and emptying them, I could do with catching a few more drops before spring.
I’m still waiting for a ‘nice’ day to coincide with me having ‘time’ to do some jobs in the garden! At least I’ve managed to move the pear tree back to the allotment.
I’m hoping that DA release a really interesting red rose that’s suitable for a pot. That would be my ideal.
and yes I actually used the ‘R’ word in a positive sentence 🌹 😮
