lovely @Eustace - do you know what they are?
  • I'd be interested to hear if people grow Dahlias from seed, and if so, which strains. I'm only familiar with the Bishop's children strain. It is a nice strain, as I can leave the tubers in the soil.

@Fire Some are dahlia figaro grown from plug plants this year. Rest are tubers saved from last year; I have been remiss at labelling them.

Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth :)

@micearguers, l grew Dahlia "Mignon mix" from seed, l sowed about half the packet and every one germinated. I got a really good mix of colour, yellow, white, orange and red, and the bees absolutely love them.
I grew Bishop's Children a few years ago and in my opinion Mignon are better, but of course you don't get the lovely dark leaves.
I don't bother keeping the tubers unless l get something really unusual, as l find them so easy to grow from seed and l don't have the worry of trying to keep them over Winter.

@Fire, l must confess that "Rebecca's World" was an impulse buy when l saw it in a catalogue. There are 3 tubers in 2 pots and they have flowered for weeks. Every flower is different.
I am definitely going to lift the tubers and try and overwinter them.

Unfortunately, I don’t hold the secret to keeping slugs and snails away from dahlias. I don’t appear to have a lot slugs in this garden, but I seem to have an endless supply of snails. I have planted dahlias in the garden only when they were quite large and kept checking them. Even so, I get lots of nibbled leaves, especially at the bottom of the plants.

@Fire, I was considering getting Dahlia Mexican Star. May I ask why you aren’t completely pleased with it?
