Children are notoriously unpredictable though - although spitting is beyond acceptable. My grandson is very shy and when he was younger, maybe 2 or 3 years old, a lady sitting on the next table at a cafe smiled at him and made some admiring comment about the toy he was holding. His response was to give her the death look and say pointedly "Don't speak to me!". My daughter was mortified and apologised profusely!!!
Reading a suggestion this morning that Emma Raducanu is to get either and MBE or OBE! ****ing (insert the appropriate replacements for the *s) ridiculous, but I wouldn't be surprised if it happened. What she did was incredible but that suggestion surely can't be serious - can it?
Kelly Homes was made a Dame for winning a few races. Mary Peters only got an OBE

At least Kelly Holmes had been involved in sport for many years by the time she was made a Dame, not that I agree with people in any walk of life getting 'gongs' for simply doing their job no matter how well they do it.Â

maybe it was just me who'd never heard of her before "those" games? IMHO "gongs" should only be given to those who have done exceptional work over a prolonged period, not hopping, skipping and jumping and playing games with balls.
Down in Cornwall we’re just a friendly lot of people , that’s why everyone wants to come here. And yes, I do belong to the old generation where every gave time of day to others. I’ll  take your advise and ignore everyone in future.
Everyone says hello to everyone around here. Well "Alright butt" some of the time but you know what I mean. It must be odd to grow up somewhere where everyone is wary each other. Â
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
@Lyn - that phrase about banging your head on a wall suits this thread just now. Like you, I wave and say hello to small children too. Having worked with them for many years, it's a normal thing to do . Most people are absolutely delightful in their response round here, and the children are usually great too. Long may that continue. How sad that some people are so suspicious of everyone and everything.Â
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I think in London there are bylaws which make it a crime to even make eye contact with folk
Lyn,which post did I loose you,? Talking of making eye contact illegal,in the paper a couple of days ago, woman complained a man looked at her bum without her permission!! I don't think she would have given it.
That's just made me think. We say hello to mostly everybody we meet on our usual daily walk down to the shops but seem to automatically stop doing that about halfway down where there's a roundabout. Is that because we perceive we are out of 'our area' at that point, it gets a bit busier and therefore people we meet are more likely to be strangers? I suppose I mainly say hello to people of my own age, not so much the younger women who give a distinct impression they couldn't be bothered and are more often than not, glued to their phones. I do try to say hello to young mums or dads though in case they are lonely but hardly ever to young men. Interesting.
