There are some items that I have been unable to obtain for weeks. Other items are more expensive than they were. I think it will get worse instead of better and I agree with @Hostafan1 it’s not a joke to those of us waiting much longer than usual for a bus or having to explain that medication hasn’t been delivered because the company is short of drivers. It won’t be funny when people die of the cold because of the massive hike in fuel prices or go hungry because food prices are rising rapidly.Â
Aren't the shelves in the supermarkets the indicator? What have you noticed in your SM? I'd be interested in how many people here no longer do an in-store SM shop since Covid and rely on home deliveries (so are no longer aware of what is available and what isn't) - but, and I think I made this point a few weeks back, the shelves in the SM I use are depleted in general. In general stock is available, but not as much of it - although the SM has been using some cardboard signs apologising for lack of stock on the shelves that are empty. I probably find that once a week, one or two items in my weekly shop aren't available. Oddly - and this is the point I think I made before - when Covid first started, the empty shelves seemed to be caused by panic buying - and you would see people with trolleys loaded with certain items. Since the delivery issue, I haven't seen panic buying at all - even though some shelves are short stocked. People seem to be more OK with the fact that some items appear to be in short supply. I'd guess that the difference is in the fear of lockdown - the '...I need enough 'stuff' to last me through 14 days min...' syndrome, that is no longer really the case.
I think the word I used - 'depleted' - is the wrong word (sounds a bit harsh and stark and on re-reading conjures up empty shelves with mice scurrying around on them in my head) - shorter stocked may be better.
Good to see though that tubs of Christmas chocolates are getting through in vast numbers. Half price masks are well stocked.
Pasta seems short in general - especially wholewheat - and has been like that for months.
Given though we're just experiencing a pandemic - with loads of knock-on effects - there's plenty of 'stuff' to eat.
Tonic water, whole chickens and orange juice are the ones I struggle with. These are things I buy, so I notice their absence but I am sure there are many others. I am furious that the decisions of other people and the lies of politicians have affected my life and the lives of my family. I don’t find it funny at all.Â
Good to see forum members are getting their priorities right ! That's a perfect Saturday night in for many folk....Â
The serious side of it is the medication, and vital hospital supplies that inevitably becomes sparse. That's a very different problem entirely. As a nation, we need to take a hard look at how we live, and what we prioritise in future. Â
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Had to message youngest daughter last night tell her energy company Avro has gone bust. Dove, you can't put "going on holiday" on the curmudgeon thread haha!! Mine, yesterday morning 9c, citrus put in green house, calamondins especially, don't like to go below 12c forecast today 24c it's just like spring,in/out no shaking it about though
Tubs of Christmas chocolates FG - that obviously (by virtue of their name) can't be opened until Christmas Eve at the earliest anyway. And still no large family packs of shortbread.......I'll have to change SMs if that situation persists. My dear dafter realised my predicament and bought a large M&S pack for me, but they weren't the same. Who buys overpriced food from M&S anyway - what was my dafter thinking?
Couldn't get Marmite either the other week - had to buy the SM own brand.Nooooooooo. Some things have to be branded don't they? Like cows and young kids with their tattoooooos.....
The only thing I've noticed missing from the SM shelves in recent weeks was a particular brand of fizzy pop that my OH drinks loads of. None of the shops around here had it for a week or two. Not the end of the world though . I'm more concerned about medical supplies. A friend of mine went to the doctors for blood tests and it wasn't until she was in with the nurse that she was told they couldn't do it because they had no vials. They must have been expecting a delivery that didn't show up, or surely they'd have phoned earlier and cancelled the appointment, or at least told her when she arrived rather than having her sit in the waiting room for 10 minutes. I've got blood tests next week (different GP practice) so we'll see how that goes.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
I think that's the carbon dioxide problem @JennyJ. You'll need to wean OH off it I can imagine a revolt around Glasgow if it affects the 'national drink' supply...
The test tubes situation was raised recently too. I don't think people realise the implications of all sorts of things.Â
