    Towing a taker is completely different to driving an artic,  when you go up hills the weight on the back is phenomenal, when you turn corners and bends same thing.
    i still think there’s a motive behind this.   Petrol has been delivered for quite a while now,  we don’t suddenly run out of drivers.
    I know, you say it’s be coming in for ages.

    I agree with you @Lyn. Yet I don't believe the government would deliberately leak such a statement - it's the last thing they need right now. Unless of course it's someone trying to bring Boris down.

    I still think it's the RHA behind it, the motive being they want to force the government into allowing foreign drivers in again as they are cheaper - cheaper drivers - more profit.

    I think you’re right on both counts @Lizzie27

    Back in the 70's when there were fuel shortages they re-issued the old war time petrol coupons. Then they enforced a minimum purchase rule which I think was 4 gallons ( remember them?) which caused me a problem as my Fiat 500 only had a 4 gallon tank! The minimum purchase rule would weed out the topper uppers pretty quickly and banning filling anything other than a vehicle fuel tank.

    A few people were suggesting that on that radio phone in @steephill. My daughter would have a similar problem though, if it was  £30 minumum - it only takes about £20 or so to fill her wee car  :)
    The theory is right though, and would sort out those folk like that ghastly woman I mentioned earlier. Still wouldn't sort her hideous attitude though.  :/

    We had to register with one petrol station,   We could have a pound’s worth the ration books were never used.
    Fortunately the dispute was solved instead of turning into another war.

    @Lizzie27
    I believe it was the CEO of the RHA (formerly a VIP at the BBC) who leaked part of report from BP which said they were at two thirds of their storage capacity without the rest of the statement which explained that was their normal position.

    Thanks @Angelicant

    An interesting read shows a multitude of reasons for the shortage of drivers.

    I find this paragraph interesting in the article. It clearly shows there's no appetite for HGV drivers to stay in the business. Its clear HGV drivers have been treated badly and its also clear that Brexit was a contributing factor to the shortage, but not by nearly as much as I originally thought. Thanks for the link its a very interesting read.

    "It means European drivers became a vital part of the industry, topping up the workforce and providing elasticity at times of increased demand. But the reliance on overseas labour has long been a source of concern. In July 2016, MPs urged the transport industry to “reduce dependence on foreign drivers”, stating “the principal responsibility… lies with the industry”.

    The situation came to a head during the pandemic following a mass exodus of drivers from the UK workforce. Exclusive ONS data shows total numbers fell from around 304,000 in Q1 2020 to 235,000 in Q2 2021, representing a net loss of 69,000. Logistics UK estimates we are now approximately 90,000 drivers short of where we need to be."

    The problem with that is that there are genuine reasons for filling jerry cans - OH uses construction machinery which all runs on diesel but he can't drive a digger 15 miles on the roads to fill it up - filling jerry cans are the only option. There was a lady on the news who was filling containers to keep her staff (carers) on the road and she got a load of abuse, apparently.
