Unfortunately MD seems to be getting more detached from the reality of most people's gardening requirements.

I remember a few years ago, one of the presenters,  my OH calls ‘The posh Bird’ I cant temper her name,  said that about getting all her border plants in one go,  she had them delivered, full size in a huge lorry.
Right,  we can all do that can’t we.

I agree. We don't all have deep pockets.
In my first proper garden, we were lucky if we could afford a bag of compost every now and again, let alone anything else. I got bits of plants from other people - or cuttings, or did stuff from seed.

Didn’t see Monty saying that, but definitely disagree too. Apart from the cost implications, and the time and energy involved in planting the whole lot at once - I can only do so much per day- I’m not that good at visualising what the final result will look like. Every plant has to count, so I can’t afford to make expensive mistakes. Also, I often have to wait, and visit several garden centres, until I find a nice specimen of the plant I want, which would delay things even further. I’d have pots sitting around for months, by which time I’d have to start over on weeding and preparing the bed.

@Fairygirl. I still do,   I never buy plants, can’t remember when I bought one last.

    Rachel de Thame @Lyn?

I have new borders planned here as it's really a blank canvas.  No way can I afford to buy all the plants at once and I'm also having to get used to a new set of soil and climate conditions so it could be wasteful.

Instead, I'm buying shrubs and trees as and when I see them or find them after doing some research and I've also sown some.   Been keeping those going in pots but it's a faff so last autumn we planted most of them out as isolated plants so they could get their roots down over winter.  That means I'll be clearing the grass and weeds (ex pasture) between them as and when I have home sown perennials large enough to plant out between them.   I also buy plants mail order in end of season sales so I can get things like helenium hybrids that don't come in seed packets.

I do much the same @Obelixx - I end up weeding a lot in the first couple of years between a few shrubs and gradually fill up the spaces with annuals initially and then perennials as and when I can strike cuttings or grow them from seed. I do buy some stuff either from the dead trolley or as small plugs and pot them. It is a slow process of evolution, that often also involves moving plants that have become crowded elsewhere in the garden and doing a bit of a shuffle with things. I can't imagine what it would be like to have a big barrow of lovely plants all ready to plant into perfectly prepared soil

I don't  think I'd  like it. No serendipity.  No surprises .
Although  I'm  pretty sure I  could tolerate the perfectly  prepared  soil. To me it's  like the perfectly sterile homes you get on that house design programme  with the nice signature tune.

Fairy, I would think Nicki Minaj's a***e would cause a total eclipse!! Went to see oldest daughter with her birthday present,(water feature for the garden,) chatting and you do. She said after last year's flu jab and 2 Covid ones this year, she's not having flu jab or boosters. Both my girls oddly A.Z collapsed on day 3, one at work one shopping. Oldest said it made her so ill, that's it. I had flu like symptoms with both, certainly wouldn't put me off. She smokes, drinks too much but is a grown woman, not going to take notice of me!!

I understand AZ isn't going to be used for the booster if that can help your argument about her not acting so rashly.  From what you say I suspect she's probably collapsed from drink in the past but that hasn't stopped her drinking again.
