What do you do to keep cool and comfortable in the hot weather?

  • I hope young women will be more informed than my generation.i knew nothing about menopause other than hot flushes and no one talked about it other than the change..then everyone said you will get breast cancer if you take it which is wrong and put so many women off taking it.if men went thru it it would be talked about, you'd have treatment then we'd look for a cure.how many women have left good careers because of it?my sister did.sorry for the rant but finding the gel working after such misery has been a miracle cure for me.perhaps not for every woman for sure. but we must get and demand help.we are 51% of the population!!

At first I was on the ,"breakthrough bleed" type of HRT my hormone levels weren't too low,my GP said you can still get pregnant up to ,50, everyone I worked with who wasn't going through it, said they would not take HRT what they did not know was I was also on the contraceptive pill as well till I was 50,(unable to use other methods,) osteoporosis and hip fractures are a killer of women over 50,

I totally agree,  I'm afraid I despair sometimes at the inequality of our modern world.  We got the right to go out to work,  to get paid less,  respected less,  objectified, then have to come home and do all the housework cooking and shopping!! It's so imbalanced it's a joke. Then to have disturbed sleep and mood imbalance due to menopause on top of all that! Anything to get the conversation going about the subject is a good thing!

anyone have a Dyson fan?!I'm thinking of getting one.every year we have a heatwave
We have a Dyson fan, bought it last summer. The smaller table top size with the circular ‘fan’, an eye-watering £300! However, it’s been terrific, mainly as it is so quiet that we can have it on all night without being woken by the racket. We’ve got through loads of the cheap ones over the years, so we took the plunge and splashed out. It’s been well worth it. Mind you, it’s been a struggle to keep cool this last couple of nights, even with the Dyson. Hubby has been looking up portable air conditioners!

@JennyJ if your periods have stopped you can take HRT in a way that stops them coming back.

Sorry, I wasn't very clear was I? Not fully stopped yet :(. It's been a couple of months now but erratic off-and-on for a year or so before that. As I understand it, you have to be a year without bleeding to be "officially" post-menopause and get the non-bleeding type of HRT. GP appointments are rare as rocking-horse poo around here at the moment so I don't feel I can really ask for one just now, so it's a waiting game to see what my unruly hormones do next.
Meanwhile, the cooling pads arrived, worked a treat and I only woke up hot once last night :)

Sleep under the stars in the garden.

I would wake up covered in insect bites. They seem to like me unless I'm coated liberally with DEET spray.

Maybe contraception pills can stop bleeding. @JennyJ
I know women who have used the pill like that to manage endometriosis nightmares.

Hmm. I took them until I was over 50 but the GP said I had to stop then. Will do some research for when I can get a GP appointment without feeling like I'm taking up time that they should be spending with people who're seriously ill (menopause is normal after all, however uncomfortable it might be).
Another concern is that if I go back on hormones (whether that's contraceptives or HRT), it's maybe just putting it off (as in @Nanny Beach 's post above. Surely I couldn't take them for the rest of my life? Could easily be another 30 or 40 years.

I have been giving some tips to my family this last few days so thought I would share. Anyone from warmer climates have tried and tested methods?

    My suggestions:

Keep curtains and blinds closed in the day.
Find the coolest room (usually downstairs and north) and camp out there.
Limit activity like house work to early morning.
Wet down patio areas etc to cool the air a bit if you are outside.
No going out between 11-4 unless in shade.
If outside, loose fitting, breathable fabric which covers your skin is probably cooler than skimpy clothes and greasy sun cream.
Tepid showers (not cold) and leave hair wet for an instant cool feeling.
If that’s too much of a faff, then wipe face/arms with cool damp flannels and let evaporate off.
Plenty of drinks. Limit coffee and alcohol. Tea is surprisingly refreshing. Drink enough to keep your ‘output’ clear (sorry - nurse in the house).
Give pets extra water (I also add water to wet food) and create snoozing areas in the cooler rooms.

I’d love to hear your ideas...

    Bumping this for July 2022…
As much as sun and warmth can be enjoyed, for most it will be an uncomfortable inconvenience. Take care folks.

    Edit: scrap the housework.
