to have an  apolitical minister wouldn't make sense but a bit of relevant experience wouldn't go amiss.
If there are no politicians with any experience outside politics, then I think that all political parties should make a serious effort to recruit them.
An MP with a degree in classics might have been more suited to minister for bookshelves.

I can't think of a cabinet in whom I've had less confidence in the last 40 odd years.
I'd not trust them to run a cold bath

Our vaccination programme - so highly lauded and so genuinely successful - was largely put together by a Government appointee. She may have been a pig at a trough but she did get it done, didn't she? When most other countries didn't. Perhaps that's the exception to prove the rule, but sometimes someone who has a private sector mentality is an asset in getting public sector work done

Don't most of the Cabinet claim to have Private Sector backgrounds?

I've no idea but most of them have public sector attitudes. And that's not necessarily a derogatory comment, although in the case of ministers, it mostly is.

Their backgrounds, be it public or private is not the issue here. Their performance in Government for the last 10 years has been lamentable

On a perhaps lighter note but nonetheless worrying, did you notice that Johnson's hair has become more yellow ?  It is edging towards orange😮

In fact I try not to look at him at all.😖
I'd bet that he'd not be able to have such a mess on his head in many jobs, Public or Private Sector.
Imagine a bank manager or a head teacher having hair like that?
    It's just laziness

Sorry but I beg to differ @raisingirl, most of the mechanics of the very successful programme were organised by the army.
