Water doesn't come much harder than it does here in Norwich ... I use Calgon in every wash to soften the water and protect the washing machine innards.

A couple of tablespoonfuls of soda crystals or some white vinegar added to the wash. I also have a washing ball thingy that I sometimes use instead of w.powder. Always line dried. No wind/sun - No wash. Only 2 of us so no worries.
I'm always opening windows even in winter, at least for a little while. This house can get damp in certain places so it's always a bit of a battle to keep the mold at bay. @Nanny Beach would your sons use a dehumidifier? Our house improved dramatically when we started using one to help dry laundry. Wasn't too terribly expensive either (about £100).
I / we have never seen the point in conditioner. As an aside, I wear 'workwear' for most of the week and wash them in the machine without washing powder. Studies have found water on it's own is about 2/3 as effective as water & the best detergent.. good enough for work gear.
Re the windows.......my bedroom window has never been closed. The window in the landing is rarely closed too. All windows opened during the day......regardless of weather, even if only for 10 minutes. I'm surprised by the amount of people who never open windows.
According to the Comfort website, their survey showed that people who use their product 'reported higher levels of confidence and happiness than those that wore an untreated jumper' So there you go - the stuff nothing short of miraculous! 🤣
@Fire Come on then - why do you ask? Are you thinking everyone else uses them and you don't know why, or are you always using them and don't know why other people don't. I can hazard a guess but just curious to know what you're thinking?
I'm genuinely interested, I don't have an axe to grind. I don't like strong smells and have never seen the need, so never used conditioner. I don't wear wool and sheets and towels have always been fine. I don't have a drier and use a clothes horse. Perhaps it's partly to do with what we grew up with and textures etc that we come to expect.
I buy a lot of second hand clothes and they always smell strongly of conditioner. The smell comes out after one wash, but it always amazes me that most people in the country seem to use it. In London we have pretty hard water. Does hard water make for stiffer clothes? I've not noticed it in my travels.
It's an interesting thread. I like finding out how other people live.
Always. My hair is awful for tangling and if I skip conditioner it gets really horrible and matted quickly. I've tried different alternative substances but nothing works as well as what cosmetic scientists have come up with.

And if you read their web page you'll realise that using it can actually be life-changing-
