@B3 I think this is the reason I’ve taken so long to decide. I was meant to paint it at Easter time!

Can't you paint your summerhouse @Fire?

My neighbours don't have any plants in their garden and have now painted the fences black. It is so depressing to look out onto. Lots of rubbish and now the beginnings of some decking that will probably never get finished!

Looking forward to seeing your finished fence @Ffoxglove

I don't want to risk it. The barn paint has lasted perfectly for over ten years without a touch up. If I go meddling I will have to keep intervening. I wouldn't have chosen that building or the use of space, but I'm lucky to have it, so I count my blessings. Every day it gives me pause for thought as to what I would have in my next garden. It's tricky when something jars every single time you see it for years and years.

I see what you mean @Fire, but I think it’s less that it’s black than the fact that the pale wood soffit and door contrasts too much, which draws the eye. If you painted them the same, or a dark grey, plus maybe a darker curtain, it would disappear more. But I wouldn’t worry about painting the front over the existing paint to soften it. If the top coat weathers a bit that might look good too, you shouldn’t compromise the paint underneath.

I'm not a fan of dark paint generally. I like natural wood tones too much. I have an oldey woldy cottagey garden kind of taste.

I ask asked the same question of this forum last year. Not sure to paint my garage or not.  Consensus of opinion was to plaint it black and I’m so glad I did. Plants stand out against it brilliantly.  However I haven’t painted the side fences black, they are just weathered wood
This was the garage last autumn. The cotinus is Grace which I cut back hard every spring
Black I think would be too much for your fencing, I agree that the mock up looks nice. The green colour might fade nicely too. Good luck with your decision - that’s a lot of painting 😳
    This is a great example
of where black works well - the planting is large enough/mature enough to stand out.

Imho with patience it can still work for ffoxglove in a year or two.  But why not try the willow until then? :)

It's Rosemary for me everytime. I am not a big fan of beigies and greys (too much grey everywhere these days). Go bold - or go home!!! 🤣😁😁👍
