I would leave it as natural, especially if it’s not south facing. We have black fences and the algae comes back every winter. Then you spend the spring waiting for 3 dry days together so you can repaint 🙄

Having seen your mock up, I think Willow looks very nice.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

    Thanks @Busy-Lizzie
The mock up fence is actually from the Cuprinol website and is fresh Rosemary although it looks more like the tester patch of willow!!!

Ive just been dithering between greens mainly because the willow green looks quite dark in the shade but I’m leaning towards it because of what @Nollie says when she says the lighter colours will be very prominent…

Think I will go for willow.

Thank you @Ffoxglove. I made a very basic era early on and nearly all my shrubs are deciduous so the whole garden looks dead all winter.

I ask asked the same question of this forum last year. Not sure to paint my garage or not.  Consensus of opinion was to plaint it black and I’m so glad I did. Plants stand out against it brilliantly.  However I haven’t painted the side fences black, they are just weathered wood
This was the garage last autumn. The cotinus is Grace which I cut back hard every spring
Black I think would be too much for your fencing, I agree that the mock up looks nice. The green colour might fade nicely too. Good luck with your decision - that’s a lot of painting 😳

On the side of the fence (!) I inherited a summerhouse which is black and I don't like it - it's too stark and stands out too much. It looks very odd to my eye. All the other neighbours have to look at it from their windows and I think we would all have all prefered a natural wood look that would blend in.

In terms of paint, I would recommend Barn Paint. It lasts for many years without needing touching up.

Once you paint a fence, there's no going back. A bit like a tattoo, you've got it forever. But, as I understand, tattoos don't need much maintenance.
    In London. Keen but lazy.
