Yes, but the profits go back to Japan and if economic circumstances or trading rules change those jobs are easily exported and the factory closed. I'd rather support European companies and jobs, especially now that it's so hard to get UK goods here.
It's often not just where the car is assembled because the bulk of the production probably comes from making the components that go to make the car. They're likely made all over with the profits from that production going to wherever they're made. We used to ship a lot into tier 1 manufacturers that's us owned and not into their European sites neither. It was a huge part of our company's turnover. Do you like German owned cars? Seat, VW, Skoda for example? Great! You're buying what we make? Raw materials come from across Europe and China. Even European suppliers doesn't mean it's Europe made.
AIUI a lot of Japanese brands imports various components from Japan. That was a change quite some time ago. Nissan UK factory AIUI users exhausts and other products from Japan.
However there is still a lot being made in the UK to go into car brands. However one of the bigger players is us company with sites worldwide. Car manufacturing is a global business. We nearly got the order to supply into Brazil of all places.
@NorthernJoe I live in France so buy European when I can. Since Brexit, buying British is problematical. I try to be ethical in my purchases so avoid anything made in China - politics and human rights violations ; no clothes made in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan - exploitation of women and children and so on and so forth. Â
@Obelixx, I commend your stance, all we are saying is, the supply chains are so complex it's often not possible to be sure where something is actually made. A lot of components are made in uk and EU, even in apparently foreign made items. Equally a lot of British brands, aren't made here at all, some are just assembled from parts bought from elsewhere. Hayter lawn mowers spring to mind.Â
It is difficult isn't it but we have to try and take a stance IMHO.
OH and Possum despair cos I refuse t upgrade to a smart phone but the horror stroies about children mining for the minerals needed put me off. Same with electric cars and their batteries. Not yet till that improves.
Ethical buying is to be commended but buying items manufactured in the EU or UK for that matter doesn't mean there has been no worker exploitation, particularly in the garment sector. Â
I make my own clothes @KT53 other than knickers, bras and some outerwear tho I can make those too. Like I said, you do what you can on the grounds that every little helps.

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.Â
I can't remember the last time I paid the full price for clothes. The local hospice has a great range of charity shops where I enjoy rummaging through the racks. Bargains and a good cause. Win,win.
