My gran was born months apart from the Queen.a staunch royalist her whole life until she got older. Then she would get wound up by comments like "isn't she doing well for her age?!!!" Those same comments were probably used for Phillip. My gran got wound up because in her words you'd probably be doing well if you had people doing everything for you including dressing to!! That's my pov. They had a life of privilege, saw so much and travelled so wildly. All the while living in the best houses/estates and the best holidays. All because some distant relative did something that got their ancestor leading a tribe. I do not see any royal as earning their position. I see them as some getting to do good because of their position, but others being a waste of space. Philip was a positive, William and Harry a negative despite the likes of invictus games.
It is always going to be a case of sending your condolences but I refuse to join the faux public mourning. I'm totally against public weepathons!!!!
As a sign of how pathetic things get, BBC Teletext usually has 2 pages per story, the obituary story has... How many pages? Have a guess. Let's see if anyone gets as close as 10 pages from the correct answer. Without knowing the answer I doubt you will.
I've just been watching a programme on Channel 4 where one of the contributors made me smile. A younger cousin of Prince Philip, she viewed him as something of a big brother. She said she could always ask him anything and new he would give a straight answer, even if it wasn't what you wanted to hear. Not a bad epitaph for anybody.
If you aren't a Royalist, a man has died aged 99 - sad for his family but surely not a national tragedy. If you are a royalist, then perhaps it is a sad event to be grieved over. Not particularly unexpected tho. Philip had his good points but also his bad points - he enjoyed a priveliged life and it has now come to an end. Even the "royals" can't live for ever ..........much the same as the rest of us really. It's news but not worth all the angst we are no doubt about to see over the next few days/weeks ( hopefully not months ). Philip was a person - his position allowed him to do things most of us couldn't - good or bad. Lay him to rest just like anyone else - it isn't the end of the world.
Good grief.the man has died and all of you seem to want to comment negatively ! That didn't take long.it does seem silly to have all of the BBC all night long to cancel all.programmes.and I'm sure he wouldn't have wanted that.but he had a sense of duty that Prince Harry certainly hasn't got.im starting to give up on this forum.
