A great life has ended

I was devastated to hear of the death, this morning, of Prince Phillip. A lifelong monarchist and near neighbour it reminds me that facing change is an ongoing state of mind.  His was a life well lived.

I came in from the garden for some lunch and turned on the TV. I cried, just felt so sad, as though part of the old England had died.

When I lost my husband it changed my life, we had more than 30 wonderful years and it never occurred to me that we wouldn't grow old and cantankerous together. I cannot imagine how losing someone who has been part of your life for more than 70 years changes your perspective.

In the midst of the chaos and upset of the past year it just feels like 'one more thing' to absorb.

I agree with @punkdoc, very sad but not a tragedy. A full life not cut short by disease, violence or accident is a thing to be celebrated.

Sad, I agree, but surely, at 99 not devastating.

Have to agree.  It's sad, especially so close to his 100th birthday but not a surprise or a tragedy.  His family will feel the loss greatly and, I expect, his friends and colleagues and successors involved in running his legacy of campaigns and initiatives.  A full life, well lived and with plenty achieved.

Yes at 99 a long and full life, however I am sure he will be greatly missed by his family, and especially the queen who has had him by her side for so many years.

I always thought he might be good company at the bar, although as @Dovefromabove says, I expect I would disagree with his views on almost everything.

I feel rather sad for the Queen.
But it's a wonderful age, I hope in the coming days it can be the celebration of a life, rather than a public weeping and wailing!
