I suppose in most countries people will speak at least two languages, it's only Britain that seems to be a bit behind, somehow thinking that English is enough. It's particularly enjoyable comparing the rich and varied ways each language comes to the same meaning via different means. Why would anyone deny themselves the possibilities they open up? I used to explain to my primary pupils when they had a little nigger at my accent - "someone who speaks with an accent, is someone who speaks a language that you probably don't." Language is communication.
