It is one of the problems of leaving them potted up, if we have cold weather, that is why imo the right thing to do, certainly in colder climates, is to lift and store. Mine have only been potted up in the last 2 weeks, in a cold g/h.

I've had them dessicate when lifted, but will try a mixture of approaches this winter and see what the results are like. I might put some in the ground and mulch, to compare the outcome of all three. Maybe seeds and cuttings too...  :D

I would think damp is more of a problem than cold...

Somehow this thread had escaped my attention ... now I see you’ve all been singing the praises of Waltzing Mathilda ... I’ve fallen for her too ... and I’ve placed an  order with Crocus ...

Years ago I use to ignorantly plant dahlias in my garden without a second thought of frost, situation or anything. They all grew, several came back for years, just left in the bed. Last year I bought 3 new tubers, I got a couple of leaves from one and that was it. Never saw them again.

This year I have bought another 3, they are in pots on a sunny windowsill. No signs of life yet.

Who knew they could be so difficult!

Also do cuttings make knew tubers? If they ever sprout of course.

My first year growing Dahlias from tubers. I have potted them up and have good healthy shoots emerging, from one to three shoots in each, all about 3 or 4 inches tall except Wizard of Oz (it’s a bit shorter but has the most shoots).

the thing I can’t find is what to do next- I know they go into the ground or into containers next- mine will go in 40-50cm terracotta pots, but it’s details like how deep to plant how much of the shoots to bury, etc that have been missing from most of the material I’ve seen.

Ive had trouble with all dahlias, except one.  A ‘giant’ pink dahlia tuber grows about 1.5m tall I got in a collection of bulbs from B&Q.

No idea what it is but it loves my garden, I’ve moved it three or four times and it always blooms big. Now settled in the Garden Of Discontent for a couple of seasons and will hopefully bloom again this year.

I have new shoots on 5 out of my 10 new dahlias in the shed, and the tiniest bit on one of the old outdoor ones :).
