I do not have a mobile phone nor will I ever and when I received the e-mail some time ago about security plans and one-time codes I phoned both my credit card companies to point this out.

I asked whether they had a contingency plan that made it possible for me to pay for items on-line. I was told not to be concerned as it was recognised that not everyone had coverage and the authorisation would be real time on-line. I have had no issues at all during the past year.

Since I am on this thread I will add that I believe this type of verification is discriminatory.

I'm sure Monty's a very nice man, but I find his presenting style and explanations all so vague.
Bring back another Mr Smith for me. Proper Gardening and clear explanation. I know he's long gone, but he's what I call a proper gardening presenter.

I have just dug up an osmanthus which has done absolutely nothing for four or five years. And guess what I found. The roots were wrapped in a teabag, which incidentally has not degraded.
I think it might be dead but I've released it and potted it up.
I used to think it was just the bedding plants that they did it to, but it's shrubs and perennials too.

I just don't get all these allegations of discrimination ... we make choices all our lives that result in discrimination ... my OH has chosen not to get a driving licence ... he therefore is not allowed to drive a car on the public highway.ย  If he did he might endanger himself and others.ย  Is that ok? Are his rights being infringed or isย  our right to be safe on the highway being protected?ย  Whose rights are paramount?ย  The individual's or those of the rest of us?

If it was my comment about mobile phones that prompted your response @Dovefromabove can I just say that you are right about personal choice and if there is a question about the safety of others then it is a very responsible attitude to consider the implications of your actions.

With regard to the security verification, it seems restrictive to have only one method available (although from my experience that is clearly not the case) I have a landline and an e-mail account, I have keypads to generate one-time codes for banking. My only access to goods and services for over a year has been on-line so to me it felt like an unnecessary restriction.

Not your post @herbaceous, and I apologise if it felt that way ... it's just that it triggered a train of thought ...ย  of late there seem to be a lot of folk making choices that affect the wellbeing of others and then alleging that they themselves are being discriminated against ... whether it be access to travel, eating out or whatever ...ย

Choices are just that ... a choice to do one thingย or the other.ย  We have to weigh up the implications for ourselves and for others and then make an informed choice.ย ย

The fact that it is not possible to have your cake and eat it seems to be a life-lesson a lot of people fail to comprehend.ย ย  :|

Had an e-mail from my bank recently saying they are increasing security and all transactions using t'interweb will have to be authenticated by inputting a code they will send to you.ย  My wife doesn't use any form of internet or telephone banking so I asked how they will provide a code to her.ย  Apparently that's not their problem!
If she doesn't use internet banking she doesn't need a code does she?ย  :)

Unfortunately she will.ย  Any transaction done on-line will generate a code from the bank as they start processing the payment.ย  That code will be sent to the registered phone, which in this case doesn't exist, and has to be entered before payment is finalised.

I know someone who is very savvy who recently had their bank account emptied when they lost their debit card ...ย  over ยฃ500 gone.ย  I think that's a good reason to get a mobile phone even if it's the only thing you ever use it for.ย ย  :)

Apology accepted although unnecessaryย  :)ย  Completely agree about the failure of some people to see the implications of their actions - it was ever thus. Unfortunately for some the dawn of enlightenment comes too late for them to appreciate the effect of their actions, which used to surprise me constantly but I fear with age comes cynicism so not so often surprised these days, saddened though.

    Thank you @herbaceous :)

Despite being a life-long libertarian and card carrying Liberal I'm getting to the stage where I feel that if some people refuse to take what is considered by the majority as reasonable action to protect their fellow-man then perhaps the time is coming when some sort of compulsion will be necessary, or at least exclusion from some activities and areas ofย  society ... much as it goes against my grain.ย ย

Also, if people choose not to take a free vaccination from the NHS to protect them from an illness, I really can't see why they can logically expect to receive free treatment should they contract that illness.ย  Maybe the freedom to choose ,for no valid medical reason, not to accept the vaccine should be conditional upon taking out an insurance policy to pay for their own medical treatment and that of anyone they infect.ย  That might concentrate a few minds ๐Ÿ˜‰

I often think that if PAYE forms included a box to say how much of their taxes goes on the NHS people would be a lot more careful about how they manage their health and lifestyle choices.
