I do have a phone but it's hardly used and don't use a credit card. You shouldn't find any problem in a store only if you are using online then it's often checked via world pay automatically. The only time now I am given a OTP number is when I am making a bank transfer payment or now and again PayPal will ask.Β In the past I gave my OH number and just made sure he was home.Β Lately though my bank just requires me to log into their banking app and confirm yes or no, so it's easier When this first started I banked with Lloyds and Santander, the former would send to a landline if you didn't have a mobile, Santander didn't have that option which is why I used hubbys' phone.
I will add my phone doesn't have internet access except when I am home and until very recently neither did my husband's but I bought him his first smartphone last year and bought a data package thinking it would be handy when we were out and about but in the last year as he is clinically vulnerable we have hardly been outside!
I don't have a smart phone @Kili because I like some "me" time.Β At home I am contactable via fixed line phone, FB messenger for a restricted few and then email or ringing the door bell.Β Β If I'm out it's cos I'm busy doing something and don't want to be interrupted or distracted so I have an old mobile phone for emergencies or to let OH know I'm on my way home.
NHS do not have enforced vaccination for things like flu. I've had a few NHS workers among friends and not one has ever had a flu jab. That's actually quite common I got told. Usually when a senior consultant is promoting the flu jab internally, according to hospital policy, only for everyone to know that he's refused the jab every year it's been offered.
I find it really quite disturbing that health professionals would not have the flu jab. If not for themselves but to protect those there working with and taking care of.
I'm sure that anyone on these forums that has had actual flu and I'm not talking about the odd sniffle and cold, but the
"suitcase with a million quid in it is on the other side of the room and if you can get to it its yours"
flu will know what I'm talking about that its literally impossible to get out of bed and at times your not sure whether your going to make it. I've had flu once in my life in my early 40's and was very fit and healthy running 40 miles a week and after being bed bound for a week and feeling at times very worried how it was going to turn out I make sure I get the flu jab every year without hesitation.
Its not an experience I want to go through again for the sake of an injection in the arm.

I do not want to be at everyone's beck and call.
Nor do I obelix. That's why I set the do not disturb function (except for my family) and use the blocking caller function to block nuisance callers should I get any not had one for years now. Nobody bothers me unless I give them permission to.
I'm not criticizing anyone for not having a smart phone merely pointing out that if your using a computer for lets say posting on a forum your basically using a smart phone just in a different format as that's all a smart phone is just a desktop computer compressed in to a small format with a GSM function. (radio technology).

On a different note and not exactly curmudgeonly but as this thread contains posts about mobile/smart phones, credit cards and banking and purchasing on line just thought I would ask......... I don't have a mobile device nor a credit card but I do my banking online and use a debit card for online purchasing.Β I haven't encountered any difficulties so far but now wonder if this is likely to be a problem for me in the future ?
If you only do on-line purchasing from home your bank can potentially use your land line number to contact you.Β The problem arises if somebody tries to use a mobile device to purchase tickets for example and do so away from home, but the bank doesn't have that mobile number.Β My bank is introducing the additional checks from the end of June, but when I asked them how a phone number can be associated with a card without telephone or internet banking they couldn't give me an answer.Β I think I'm going to have to visit our local branch to try and sort it out.

...
I have a similar set up ... the Do Not Disturb function is permanently set to come on in the early evening and turns off after breakfast ... only the offsprung can 'over-ride' that, and then only if they make two calls in quick succession which they would only choose to do in a real emergency.Β Β I could have that function switch off later or even have it on 24/7 if I wished.Β Β
If I don't want to take calls during the day I click the 'off switch' which prevents any ring tones from sounding, then when I choose to check my phone I can see whether I have any missed calls or messages and who they're from.Β I am at no one's beck and call ... I am in control of who contacts me and when ... far more so than with the landline.Β

Thank you. I have a landline but never yet had the bank ring me to confirm ( or otherwise ) a purchase or any other transaction. My bank constantly changes the online set up which is frustrating but nothing I can't deal with at present. No doubt there will come a time when you need to post a pic and fingerprints before any transaction can take place - then I'll have to have a rethink
