Yes, I agree, too. It was something we can all adopt if we decide to go peat free. It made sense and was very useful.

It’s currently getting just under 3 million per episode which is still above what it was getting pre lockdown 1 so a lot of new viewers have stuck around.

As a newbie to gardening myself I would appreciate a bit more focus on the fundamentals.

Carol’s recent show on 5 was fab for someone who still needs to know the basics.

A nice mix of basic stuff and some visits to gardens for inspiration and ideas would be great.

It used to be 4 million in the days of GH and AT.  This article, tho from 2009, has some interesting and perceptive comments about how Gw and its hosts relate to viewers  - https://www.express.co.uk/expressyourself/139134/What-ever-happened-to-Gardener-s-World

All TV viewing figures have declined a lot since then. If Monty is getting 3 million in today's terms, he's doing a lot better than GH and AT were if they were getting 4 million in theirs.

  • Mind you the reported viewing figures will include on demand viewing too...but considering how little live TV people watch it's a very decent figure in today's media landscape.

That Express article was very interesting, ironically l liked Toby Buckland and the premise of having a blank canvas for him to work on, rather than having to shoe horn plants and projects into an existing garden.
I see they predicted great things for Alys Fowler, l must see what she's up to these days.

It’s a fantastic figure for tv these days and in particular for BBC2.

You look at Eastenders which, back when AT was on GW, would get 10/12 million and is now lucky to get 5 and you can see how steady/increased the GW audience is despite TV viewing figures, bar the odd phenomenon like Line of Duty, falling across the board.

I'm a bit of a cynic with regard to the accuracy of viewing figures. The small sample size and extrapolation methods make the numbers produced arguable. Also, does anybody know anybody who has ever had one of the boxes installed?

It was also good to hear Adam say that he has worked 'peat free' for many years and for him to acknowledge it took a lot of work to get the compost right.  Hearing that from a pro gardener of many years standing does give hope, although it shouldn't be necessary to faff around with the base compost.  It wasn't generally required with peat based, they were pretty consistent in their formulation.

Surely the solution is for the manufacturers to produce a product which is fit for purpose?
