Good thread here - although should come with one of those warnings they put out before hospital, or murder, documentaries!Â
I love my garden and it means the world to me BUT the previous owners must have gone round and planted most of all the ones youâve mentioned! I have learned to embrace the Spanish bluebells, Celendines, Ladyâs Mantle, Crocosmia etc. If I pulled all these out - I would have to give up work to do so, and then wouldnât be able to afford replacements.Â
My latest pearl is beware putting your hand into a glove which has been left outside... there might be a bee inside đđĄ!Â
I would also add add to the list - donât spend ages making a new or raised bed and leave it bare or the neighbourhood cats will just see a sign saying âluxury bathroom hereâ.
Don't assume everything that pops up unexpectedly at this time of year is Spanish bluebell. I've a horrible suspicion that I've pulled out my chinodoxia. On a similar subject,, if someone gives you a present of mixed allium bulbs. NEVERÂ EVER plant the tiny ones
@AuntyRach thatâs precisely what happened to me this weekend. Prepared my raised beds, dug in some compost but wanted to wait a bit with planting as itâs still below freezing at night. The entire local cat population must have read it as an invitation.
Donât try to tidy your pond whilst wearing old wellies. They filled up with very cold water in no time through all the little tears that have developed.
Don't divide grass or anything grass-like until mid to late spring at the earliest. In fact I find spring the best time generally to split most things.Â
Don't copy @hostafan1 and bash your finger with a club hammer. Even though the hammer isn't so heavy as his & does much less damage it still hurts like hell.Â
I remembered one...... Don't leave the tap of your water butt open when you use the last of the water.
You'll head out excitedly after heavy rainfall to see how much you collected only to find that for some mysterious reason, none of the rain fell into your water butt or collected from the guttering.Â
It'll take you a good week to figure out this mystery.
Don't let your OH fit any water butt unsupervised because you've assumed he's going to use his brain!
They'll fit the tap to the higher outlet hole which means a good 1/4 of the water is unobtainable. They won't raise the butts above ground level so you can get a watering can below the outlet and they won't use the kit that allows you to take water from a downpipe thru a small hole, thus allowing all sorts of algae and mosquito larvae to take up residence which is good for neither seedlings nor humans.
Do count to ten before explaining all these problems and requiring they be fixed - and explaining how!
