I think I need to clarify, it is not a new garden. It is undergoing extensive restoration after being badly vandalised in the 1970's. It then fell into neglect. In it's heyday it was considered the most authentic garden outside of Japan, they are working hard to restore it to that level. There are a few Japanese style public gardens around the UK, some more authentic than others. Chris, shame about your tree, but I guess we all have to accept that not all trees live for hundreds of years.
Yes, I think you’re right. After the initial surprise I had to shrug my shoulders and move on.
There are a couple of YouTube videos people have done of a walk round The Japanese Garden at Cowden. Feel I have a had a good (virtual) walk around it now.
You made me think, AnnaB. This might be of interest. Plans for the garden in 1987 set against recent photos. The ‘maki’ (Japanese Yew?) in the top right, looks like it was either already there or transplanted like the garden centre ones. The plum tree (bottom left), looks like it would have been young. I suppose the ‘bonsai’ looking black pine in the centre was also transplanted. The rest of them look like they were not there before.
Current house drawn over previous house which was demolished. This meant the small garden at the front and to the north was also taken out. Building to the bottom left now no longer there but was at time of rebuild. No trees in that area then or now except for a holly.

I would love to see that some day.
Many thanks,
Chris
