  • Husband helping me to create a willow bender. Hoping to use it as a sweat hut at some point. In Co Leitrim they were traditionally made from stone and thatch.

Hi @josiethelens love your willow den!
I'm happy to read about your adventures in which ever way you would like to up date us.  I'm a country girl stuck in a city so I love to hear of your escape.  Thank you!
  • Thanks Hun, stay safe x
  • Definitely do a bit at a time, but think carefully about your overall strategy for the garden, so that it is manageable and doesn't become a burden.
We bought a 3 acre plot in 1984. Roughly 2/3 was grazing, the remainder comprising the house, front yard and rear terrace, which are level, and the rest, which is decidedly not. This was to become "garden", though it  includes a large boggy triangle in which I have never been able to walk :)
I was always the gardener, though OH was good at DIY jobs and happy to mow or strim if need be. In 2003 he had a stroke and I became his carer, with sole responsiblity for the garden.
It is my joy and is what keeps me going, but it is far too big for me to keep it properly tidy, so as I have always loved wild flowers, I  have made it a wildlife garden. The bits nearest the house get most attention. If the rest looks a bit messy in places, no matter, the wildlife likes it that way and it is amazing how much better it looks if you just have an area of mown grass with sharp delineation!
  • Hi Buttercup, sound advise for sure. We aim to expand slowly, but this winter we have trees on the southern boundary to cut down as they are shading the plot. We have graph paper so aim to plan during the winter months. Too cold to do too much at present. All the best and keep safe. X
