Chive, I didn't know about the noise  either until I witnessed it. It's a noise I cannot describe. It was between a squeal and a hiss. I am ok with Spiders. They get caught in a glass and chucked out of the front door. Mr PurpleRose on the other hand is terrified.

SGL, good news about the vaccine. Glad you are feeling fine after it apart from a sore arm.

Big lad, our garden bin is collected March-December. The fee is the same if you do it at the beginning of the season or towards the end. I have just paid my fee for this year as it takes a few days to get on the rota so I just paid it whilst it was on my mind as I have a full bin and i would probably emember too late.

Morning Debs, PR and Ruby. Enjoy your walk with your sister today Debs. How is she doing these days? PR, I have two green bins, one normal size and one half size and I do not pay for either of them. I have so much 'stuff' to get rid of that I asked the council for the extra bin and it has been a godsend. Ruby, I was surprised myself when I woke up and realised I had slept so long.

We've 'progressed' :o from having a free year-round collection to a free 8-month collection to a paid-for 8-month collection (*no collection if the road is snow/ice covered but no refund). No doubt the fee will start to creep up now!

I can afford it and it is a good service in a lot of ways, but I can't help but wonder how many people are put off by the fee and dispose of their garden waste elsewhere? Surely it is something that should be encouraged? Why not charge everyone for non-recyclable waste?

    Moan over! Work beckons :(

  • Good Morning Biglad, LB, Debs, PurpleRose & Rubee and all to follow,
Biglad Our council provides a year round garden waste collection, but to have this service you pay £59.80pa. It works out cheaper than a regular drive to the refuse centre which for us is not that local and saves a messy car,
LB Glad you slept well, fingers crossed you are able to get away later in the year. I also wanted to thank you for all the quizzes you’ve been posting for us, it’s your time & effort in doing that. Hopefully now we can all start to get more gardening opportunities as Spring approaches,
Debs Enjoy the walk with your sister today, hope you are able to get out in your garden this weekend,
PurpleRose That is a very strange noise, perhaps you gave him a fright 😀 Hope today goes well nearly the weekend,
Rubee This week my time table has slipped, but you’re right an earlier start gets you on track for the day.
Hazel The school holidays don’t always fall the same do they, it can catch you out 😊
Hope you have a good day everyone.

  • Meant to add my brother had his 1st vaccine yesterday, so pleased he was invited to get it.

Morning. It's dry & a bit chilly but warm enough to garden wearing appropriate layers. A neighbour is coming to collect a load of hazel poles harvested just before the snow. Some of them are about 4m long so I hope she has a suitable trailer or vehicle! She & her neighbour want to make pea & bean supports for their allotment. It will be good to see a different face.

Think I might try to finish off some tree work and prune the roses. Maybe some mulching.

I also didn't know frogs / toads made anything except 'read-it' noises - every day's a school day. Don't mind frogs, insects or spiders but I'm another squealer when it comes to things that scurry - voles, shrews, mice etc.

We have the same garden bin regime as Chive - £50 or £60 a year but collected 48 weeks of the year (not over Xmas). It's the first collection to be sacrificed when it's bad weather or there's a shortage of crew but we do get a reduction on the next year's fees of £2 per missed collection. It's a very convenient way of getting rid of the stuff I really don't want in the compost bin....

LB - 🤞for your trip to France - although I'm sure your usual family get together in the Lake District would be nice enough just now. It's coming....

  • Top bird I’m glad your okay after your jab.  I’m going for mine today.  Chive I hope mums eye is feeling better.  Hazel good to hear soil is soft and crumbly it makes gardening more enjoyable.  I’ll have to look up the plitosporum.  Purplerose im sorry to hear of your fear of frogs and toads.  LB I’m glad you had a good sleep.  Lily it’s good to hear you’ve had your vaccine.  It’s wise to take paracetamol for a while.  I think I’ll take some before I go for mine.

Afternoon all. I had a marvellous trip to 'sco. Got everything on the list but when I got to the check out, to my surprise, 2 bags of compost had leapt into my trolley. The sad news is that it was starting to spit and spot with rain as I went back to the car. I don't think I'll get into the garden later.
