Thanks @Omori, re Sombreuil - I like the sound of ‘romantic’. I don’t suppose you remember much about the fragrance, given it was so long ago? Opinions seem to vary.
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
but be wary of putting anything down I wasn't afraid to lose...
Expected you might have the odd bit of fruit or veg pinched... You'd have thought that, practically, a building would be a reasonably safe bet! 😄
I've had a lovely day at work though, done some really fun stuff with my class so that's helping. Although if I'm not constantly busy I start thinking about it!
@Tack hope flooding doesn't get too much worse, I'd love to have bees one day. At least they like my garden so I get lots of visitors 🐝
@Mr. Vine Eye I was coming on to say Cottage Memories too. I bought potted roses twice from them last summer, really good . And I noted Marlorena's bareroots looked excellent recently.
Bees are great, the equipment takes some space and I find I worry about them eg varoa pest, flooding, marauding alien species and now thiamethoxam. But the 40 odd kilos of honey we got the year before last meant we didn't take any last year at all, so very little effort. But we could have and then supplemented sugar fondant.
Edit: Oops 40 kg is what we have taken in total from this hive.
@Omori@Nollie That description is actually wrong. I am sure we discussed it before, the Sombreuil confusion - Sombreuil/Mademoiselle de Sombreuil (climbing tea) vs. Sombreuil/Colonial White (large-flowered climber). They are selling the climber but describing the tea rose. The real Sombreuil (Colonial White) is probably a hybrid wichurana or relative to them.
...sorry to add to the confusion, but the description in the DA book is actually for 'Colonial White' [Sombreuil].. apart from the first sentence, whereby they all make the same mistake, referencing the 1850 Tea... but the description is all 'Colonial White'... evidenced by it being described as ''completely hardy'' which the original Tea 'Mlle. de Sombreuil' is anything but..
'Colonial White' under the name 'Sombreuil' is the only one of the two roses they would be familiar with in recent decades here, as they refuse to acknowledge the mistake, or are unaware of it... and all modern references to the 1850 Tea refer to 'CW'..

I know Trevor Whites and David Austin.
People have had mixed experience with Peter Beales. I noticed they've priced themselves higher than David Austin now, substantially actually.
Are there any that should be first port of call and any to avoid?
Fragrant Rose Company (anyone used them?)
Thank you!

..it's a very thorny rose apparently..
..similar unacknowledged mistakes.. 'Irene Watts'... 'Bloomfield Abundance'.. 'Francis Dubreuil'.. etc etc..
