  • Great Igloos , never had enough snow at once to even think of  making one.   We have another icing sugar dusting here . In spite of putting the mealworms out  even the birds are slow to get going today.
Keep warm/ cool  whatever your preference today.

I thought Somerset was warmer than most, 4 layers and a blanket, goodness me.  Our place has 2 outside walls in every room, apart from the conservatory which has 3, (detached bungalow) Our boiler decided to give up a couple of weeks ago, just before this cold snap.  People out walking the dogs kept saying "at least, it's not cold".  It's a positively balmy 0c at the moment, but boy is the wind fierce!!
  • Morning all, Still snowy down here in Kent, we had another dumping of snow last night which we weren't really expecting so it is still bitterly cold. We have a large number of garden birds here and we have found real joy watching them so we have been regularly trudging out to make sure the fat balls and seeds are full up. We were re-paid this morning when we had 4 goldfinches on the feeders at once!! They often make an appearance on their own or as a pair, but not two pairs together! I have tried to get the photo but apologies its a bit blurry!!

My Thomson and Morgan package is due today of 30 perennial bare roots - I fear I may have to temporarily pot them up as there is no way I will be able to get them in the ground currently!

How lovely @rholden_82 - love it when the goldies come to visit here.

Yesterday’s lecture was a success 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻.  Today’s task is to write a report on it for the website 📝

    Hello all.
I was in the middle of posting this morning when the log man arrived a bit early. I've been stacking logs ever since, come in for a break. smallish pile left now. It was 3m3. Some are in the stove and it's heating really well, almost too hot! 3 yr old oak. Need to get it all under cover as heavy rain forecast for tomorrow.

Dishwasher should be delivered this afternoon but the plumbing isn't done yet.

Anti burglar camera man should be coming this afternoon too.

Hi everyone,  Another sunny but freezing day here.  I'm off to Secondborn's to pick up the boys this afternoon as she has parent's evening and wont be home until after 7.
Hubby was fine after his jab.  Tired and achy yesterday but no problems today.  He has been clearing out the playhouse as we have someone coming to collect it Saturday morning.  I have raised beds on order and can't wait for them to arrive to get that part of the garden sorted.
Would love a bit of that heat right now @Pat E

  • Hi all - I am just seeking a bit of advice from you all!!
I have just had my bare root delivery from T&M of perennials and I'm not quite sure how to temporarily store them. I have received:

    Convallaria Majalis
    Saponaria Ocymoides
    Alcea Chaters Mixed
    Lupinus Russell Hybrid
    Echinops Ritro
    Eryngium Plenum
    Crocosmia
    Gypsophila Rose
    Aquilegia McKana
    Echinacea Purpurea

Shall I bung them in pots with compost temporarily until the snow has melted and I can get them planted? Put them all in one pot and cover the whole lot with compose? Leave outside in the bag/box they have come in?? I'm not quite sure for the best as I've never bought bare roots before let alone from online!

Also any hints or tips on getting the best out of any of these would be great!!

    Thanks in advance all!!
    Rebecca xx

@rholden_82 if it was me I would pot them up individually (I always do that with bare roots anyway - I like to see a bit of growth on them before I put them in the ground) and group all the pots together somewhere sheltered until the temps get back above freezing.  Do you have a porch or conservatory or a garage/shed they could go in for the next couple of nights?  Also, all the text books would say water them immediately after potting them up, but I would wait til this cold spell is over.  Wet compost is more likely to freeze and damage them, and I don’t think a couple of days without hydration will hurt.

You’re going to have colourful borders this summer 🌸🌼🌸🌼
