Cheerful reason from two days ago when the temperature shot up: I struggle with some areas of dry shade in my garden and decided last autumn to plant a Mahonia aquifolium ‘Smaragd’ in one corner. I sort of knew they were fragrant in flower, but in my tiny walled garden, the effect is magnified. So on Wednesday as I stepped out into the warm afternoon, the whole space was filled with a gorgeous smell of orange-blossom. I think the combination of warmth and the still air was perfect. Now I can look forward to it again in future years.
