And the new electric card can recharge in 30 mins.
That doesn’t negate the other negatives, but it does mean that if those problems are solved the cars will be more viable.
Very fast charging and immediate access to charging points at service stations are required to make EV truly practical for everybody. Even at a motorway services you will normally only have a couple of dozen petrol pumps, and a typical car would be there for a couple of minutes to fill up. On that basis you would need 15x as many charging points.
Cost is also a very major negative. It's all very well to say that money is saved over the life of the vehicle but you still need to be able to buy it in the first place. Interest free loans, backed by Government might help, but why should people be forced to pay a massive premium on price in the first place?
My son leases his electric car. The arrangement seems to suit him and his family - they use it for short journeys, and recharge it when the sun shines using their PV panels. It's a Nissan Leaf. For long trips they have a "car swap" arrangement with local friends, who make use of their Leaf while they're away.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

Sounds like a great solution for your son if he generally only does short journeys. That's where EV can come into their own. His problem may arise if he needs to do a long journey when the friend needs their own car.
I will buy an electric car when I can fully recharge it in the same time it takes to fill the petrol tank.
Or alternatively when you can't buy petrol as easily, which will happen.
I have spent all year talking to people about climate change and keep getting the same answers. We think its terrible, the terrible fires in Australia, coral reefs dying across the globe, floods and famine and its all really shocking something must be done. Just not by me. I won't change my life, I won't accept any inconvenience at all, if its not quicker and/or cheaper I won't even consider it. Gardeners can't manage without peat, builders won't accept a 4% increase in construction costs, the Government won't let us enforce stricter rules, it's all too difficult and I'm really upset because with Covid, I couldn't have had my two holidays in the sun this year.
I'm now having a couple of weeks off so am not going to get into the debate. But, for the record, it makes me quite curmudgeonly.
Merry Christmas

The price of batteries for electric vehicles has been falling rapidly, roughly by half every three years. Prices are expected to continue falling rapidly for some time, and the battery makes up a large fraction of the total cost, so electric cars will become far more affordable.
