Another day in the garden, I pop out to do a couple of hours and the next thing I know it's sunset. Lovely though.
Very tricky to see, you hear rather than see, but migrating cranes passed over my head late this afternoon. These must be the stragglers, normally we see hundreds of them. The noise is cocophonous. (?!?!)

On the other side of the valley from my house stands this lonely tree. Only at this time of year and with fine weather at the right time of day do you get this effect where the hill is in shadow but the angle of the sun lights up the Autumn leaves and it stands out like a beacon. It's a good mile away and my long lens doesn't quite have the reach to get a good photo but you get the idea. The rest of the hillside was probably deforested for firewood and pit props, and the sheep have prevented any new tree from replacing them but for some reason this one survived. The fence behind it is new and the lower slopes have now been planted up with thousands of trees. Hopefully this one will have spread plenty of seeds down there too just waiting for a sheep-free time to stick their heads up and start sucking up the CO2 produced by the coal their ancestors died to help extract.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
It's ok @B3 - I've got lots of places to stay Love the pix @wild edges and @steephill I know people get very worked up about grey squirrels [I often do myself!] but it's not their fault they're here, and they provide me with endless entertainment. I swear, the one that tried to get in my bird cages, and couldn't, gave me such a filthy look Nothing can match our beautiful reds though, and it's soul destroying that they're struggling so badly. No stranger to them up here though - see them regularly when out on the hills. Long may it continue. This one was a good omen, and patiently waited until I took some photos
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Love the reds trouble is only see them in pics, stopped the grey raiding the feeders by greasing the pole, this sparrowhawk comes in to see us a few times a week, doesn't get much a nice spiny berberis alongside the feeders.
He's a very fine fellow though @cornelly. They all have their place, and even though we get upset if something like that catches one of the little birds, it's all part of nature. They all have to eat I had a juvenile one a couple of times here recently, which is very unusual. They're around, but don't come into gardens normally. He must have got lost

I had a cheeky red squirrel do something similar the other day too! haha. Too quick for a pic though.
