If we need two portions of pasta, we measure out one bowl full, as it'll double. Four portions = two bowls. If course this doesn't work for spaghetti, but we have one of those spaghetti measures for that, and it's always correct. Rice is measured by weight - 2oz per person. Never have excess, always have enough. This is good, as we can't bear waste so would always end up eating the excess - not good!

Hmmm. That was probably not sufficiently curmudgeonly to be on this thread. So I'll just say harumph to life, the universe and absobl***ylutely everything else for good measure.

I open freeze leftover rice and put it in a big bag so that I can easily extract a handful or two. Pasta gets wasted or eaten, I'm afraid.

Yes, I agree, we freeze leftover rice and use for Kedgeree, Nasi Goreng and random stir-fries.

Never knew you could freeze left over rice! However I shall be completely shameless and admit to using the microwaveable 2 min packs. I don't like cooking, a complete waste of time for me - much rather read a book.

I read somewhere that reheated cooked pasta is better for you than fresh... can't remember why, something to do with lower glycemic index perhaps?  Not that we have leftover pasta or rice.  Can't be bothered weighing it regularly, so I worked out what 2 portions was in my handfuls, so I just scoop it out of the jar.  Laziness sometimes pays...

@Lizzie27 - I don't much like "everyday" cooking either.  Hubby really doesn't care what he eats, as long as it's "simple" - I realised a long time ago that he prefers traditional, rather bland food so it's not worth going to a lot of trouble.  Cake is a different matter though... I love making it and he has a sweet tooth... just need to be careful not to make it too often, or we'd both be barrel-shaped.   :/

We never have any food leftover,  I cook what we will eat, all plates cleared.

@Liriodendron, my OH just likes eating! I call him the human dustbin sometimes. He did come from a large family of boys however so there were always fights over any left-overs. We both like cake which is why I rarely bake. Being short and fat, I can't afford any more inches on my waistline. I prefer simple food as well as I believe sauces and spices just mask the taste of fresh food.

If you are going to freeze cooked rice, it must be put in the fridge within about 20 minutes otherwise toxins can develop which cannot be destroyed by cooking. It's safe to leave it in the fridge for a day or two after that while you decide whether to eat or freeze. If your rice is overcooked, freezing won't improve it but properly frozen rice is ten times better than the packet stuff.
