Technology not gardening

I nearly down/ uploaded the Zoom app but the permissions are horrifying ( I think) so I abandoned it.
Unfortunately, if you want to interact with groups that you knew pre lockdown, it seems to be the only way.
It doesn't bother me so much that they will know things about me ( well actually it does) but it seems that they can get in and fiddle with stuff ( limited computer terminology)
Is it safe to join this merry band?

I use zoom to chat with my children, meet with our congregation a couple of times a week and have attended several funerals I would in normal times been unable to go so I don't worry about privacy issues.
Oh and also used another app to talk to the vet!
  • There's lots of options and alternatives - zoom, teams, Skype, arkadin, Google hangouts etc. But zoom is fine. As with all of these things, don't type your bank details and so forth into chat windows and you'll be fine!

Since I had a video call with my GP a couple of weeks ago I've had trouble with my web cam. If I Zoom my daughter I can see her but she can't see me, have been trying to sort this but just going round in circles. I get the impression it might have been hacked.  :#

You can use Zoom in a browser rather than downloading the app. The functionality is reduced a little, but might be enough depending on what you want to do.

Search for Zoom, go to the website, use it via the website (ie: in your browser) rather than downloading anything. Simplest if someone else is setting up the meeting and can send you a link to join it - you click on the link, it opens in your browser, choose not to launch the app (which you can't if you haven't downloaded it).

What are you using it for? Just a video chat, or a meeting, quiz, conference, course?

So, probably talks. Using it through your browser will probably be fine (it's been a while since I used it without the app so can't remember all the details). It's only if they're doing breakout groups or other fancy stuff that it might be compromised, I think.
