ok, I managed to find two of the recommended varieties.
I have planted them today 3rd October and for the sake of the experiment, I will try and post in this thread again as soon as they start flowering. Really curious myself now 😄
I missed this topic originally, but yes I can confirm that early sensation are the earliest daffs I've had, flowering early Jan. I've recently bought a load more from Peter Nyssen.
My eccentric neighbour had some plastic daffodils that at night he would "plant " in his front garden and discuss them with passers bye for many weeks.
Sorry
Everyone is just trying to be Happy.....So lets help Them.
@NewBoy2 That actually sounds mentally pathological (your neighbour, that is)
On another note.. I’m growing paperwhite daffodils this year indoors, so technically they would be the earliest to flower (probably by December) - does this count? I’m also growing Erlicheer and Grand Soleil D’or.. all indoors of course but I’ve also planted some Grand Soleil d’or outdoors to see if there’s any difference..
I have Narcissus Tazetta ‘Paperwhite Ziva’ which may flower early in January some years. I know you can "force" them to flower before Xmas indoors, but I would not do it as I find their "perfume" pretty offensive. Some pics on my garden site at https://www.rezeau.org/wp-garden/en/narcissus-tazetta-paperwhite-ziva-2/
@Papi Jo yeah.. everywhere I’ve looked online people say Ziva stinks.. but yet the reason I bought it was because all the nurseries say it’s highly ‘fragrant‘.. none of them warned customers of the divided opinions on whether the smell is pleasant or offensive. I’m hoping to be the judge myself.. I planted mine 3 weeks ago and they already have flower buds on them.. I reckon I will have some flowers by early November.
I also picked up a ready made pot containing paperwhite ‘Galilee’ which is supposed to have a milder and more universally accepted fragrance.. will see how it compares to Ziva. It’s interesting to note that I simply cannot find any nursery that sells a variety of paperwhite other than Ziva.. I only found Galilee sold in a ready made indoor pot (which is obviously much more expensive thanks to the marketing gimmick)..
@Big Blue Sky I’m growing them indoors.. given they’re meditarrnean in origin I didn’t think they would be frost hardy.. I suppose it’s hard to enjoy any blooms too early in the season given it’s so cold outside.. ? I plan on bringing in whatever early daffodil blooms I might get indoors as cut flowers anyway so I can enjoy them properly..
@Papi Jo So my Ziva has flowered.. and unfortunately I’m still undecided as to whether I like them or not, on w good day they smell sweet but on a bad day ‘cat piss’ really does spring to mind.. somehow it’s a very polarising experience..
They do look pretty though.. but I noticed that most bulbs only produce one spike of flowers (of which multiple flowers form) - but a few of them produced leaves without flower spikes.. perhaps I shall give those a bit more time.. I did plant them all at the same time
I am planning to pot up the Galilee variety next week.. been busy at work!
