One of my bays is over 30 years old. it has survived a good few hard winters without a scratch.

I’ve never protected mine. It was left to its own devices during the “Beast from the East” plus a few more very cold north eastern winters.

Perhaps the one that died wasn’t given enough water when it was first planted?

Do we know the history from when it was planted up?

@shazza 3 -Sorry your thread got 'sidetracked' [to use a polite term!] but it didn't look like that was going to make it.
Sometimes, even when two plants seem to be in the same conditions, and the same site, one can just be more vulnerable to everything. As @TheGreenMan says, the original cultivation/care may have had an influence, and it may even have been down to it's general health when you originally got it. Some plants just thrive less well. Perhaps you'll be able to get another one for your matching pot   :)

@philippasmith2 - I also have a country residence in the north east....

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

    I beg to differ. :)
Fair enough - everyone is entitled to voice their opinion whether or not we agree  with each other :)

Could someone copy and paste the trolling for me? I can't find any.
    I can find a 💩 stirrerer, though.

Just to add to the fun, we got down to -18 this year, and we had two weeks under -8 I had planted one bay tree out in the ground the previous year as a kind of throw away, I expected it to die when we got a cold year I didn't expect that to be it's first year. BUT it survived, all the leaves died but it regrew them in the spring. It does have shelter, it's about 3m away from a S/E facing wall and is right next to a large concrete path and is surrounded by gravel but still, they can survive. I lost a potted one in Aberdeen to about -2C so I think positioning, wind, damp etc has a huge effect on the kill temperature of Bay trees.
I hope it will be a few years before we get under -10 again and maybe my little tree can hang on for a while.

Can accusing someone of trolling be considered trolling?

    No - it's just a statement  :)
