Green Tomatoes - again . . .

Green tomato chutney I know about.  How about some cooking suggestions (or usage suggestions) for green tomatoes other than chutney or pickles ?

Any good, tried and trusted, family recipes out there ?

Still plenty of time for tomatoes to ripen, so is there a reason you're thinking they won't turn red?
Mine are only just fruiting, and very slowly starting to change colour.  :)

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • You may be right. I am no expert at this. We have a plentiful crop, all green at the moment and the weather seems to have taken a turn for the worse, so I don't see much warmth in the offing. So preparing for the worst.

There's always fried green tomatoes (maybe you are too young to remember the Whistle Stop cafe) which I made for my brother along with cornbread and pumpkin pie when he retired back to the UK.

Personally didn't like any of it but that might just be me  :s

Fried green tomatoes?  My mum used to make those.. they were dipped in egg and then into seasoned bread crumbs and pan fried.

Maybe that's where I went wrong @Blue Onion  :D    my American cookbook said to use corn meal (closest I could get was polenta) not breadcrumbs.........

I forgot the flour step first.. my mum would have just used normal flour instead of the stuff in this recipe.

Blimey, chutney is easier than that!

I expect to be picking outdoor tomatoes from mid July until into September.

We often go away for the second week in September ... before we go we pick the last of the green tomatoes and spread them out on trays on the dining table.

When we come home many will have ripened and are then roasted and frozen. The green ones are chutneyed.

But there’s no need to be thinking about chutney making just yet ... the outdoor tomato harvest has only just started. 😊

Edited to add:  I now see you’re a lot nearer the Arctic Circle than we are ... I suggest you take more notice of @Fairygirl than me 😂
