Can I plant perennials in seed trays all year round?

Hi all,

I can't seem to find the answer to the question above anywhere.

I have a few packs of different perennial seeds, and was wondering if it is too late in the year to start them now?

I tried searching online but the information online is about when to plant already grown perennials from pots into the garden.

I'd appreciate any help.

Thanks.

What does it say on the back of the packs? They usually have a little chart showing when to sow, plant out and when it flowers.

Maybe if you ask online about sowing perennials you would get a better answer. You sow seeds, which is what I think you mean, but you plant plants.

You mean sow seeds, not plant perennials in seed trays, a lot can be sown in spring, or autumn, to make nice healthy plants either to go out in autumn, (I do this with foxgloves) or the following spring.

    Haha, I stand corrected.

Yes, sowing is what I mean. That must be why I couldn't find the answer.

    Thanks.

@Lizzie27 thanks. I had a look on the back but couldn't really make sense of it. I can take a pic and put it on here....

P.s when it says sow outdoors, can this be in cell trays outdoors, or does it have to be in the ground?

    Thank you.

I dont sow anything direct, I find its not very effective, you cant see where the seeds are, and I have found that germination isnt very good, you also have to have this piece of nice fine soil, and I see these say rows 8 inches apart.  Once you know what you are doing and what works, you will be well away.  Me, I would put them in a seed tray, then keep moist, etc, and leave them outside to germinate.I would sow half the packet now, and the rest in the autumn, either way, you wont get flowers till next year.

I would start them now, keep them somewhere sheltered over the winter, plant in Spring.......that's what I do

@Nanny Beach Thank you, that is exactly what I was thinking. I've had success with starting seeds off in trays indoors before.

    Thank you very much 🖒
