Oh thanks poppyfield, that's so kind of you to say so... my aim over the last year or so, was to get people interested more in roses, and thereby talking about them because there never was much talk of roses on this forum, and I felt there was an underlying need for that... I think I've been proved right there..
I would also like to see more people diarise their own gardens, as I've been doing here, adding something each day... even if only for a few short weeks... it's more personal I think.. but you do need a fair number of plants to keep it going..

@Marlorena I am always happy to see the pictures you post in your threads and the sage advice you give the forum members. I am fond of roses, used to plant them in pots/ground and throw away the labels. I'm now careful and notice the flower shape, its scent and all, after reading your posts. :)

And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth :)

..well, thank you and so great to see you here too...  I noticed your lovely roses on the other thread...  if you still have the labels, we always like to know the names, so maybe for next time if you remember, but no bother if you don't..

Would love to hear some recommendations for a climber with good fragrance to go around a front door.  It would get around 8 hours of full sun but would have to be suitable for a very large pot as the front of house is all blocked.

Malorena I see you grow some roses in pots.  Please can you let me know what size you use and what the container is made of.  And any hints on what sort of roses do well.  I have a patio rose in a container and it does very well with extra feeding

...thank you for your question, and for coming here...  I'm going to refer you to the pot king, who is a young man near Liverpool called Adrian, he grows lovely roses in pots, and he can be found on the main Roses thread... @celcius_kkw
...just to put a tag out for him... he will hopefully see this and reply on that thread for you...  my way of pot culture is not for everyone, I use cheap 20 ltr pots from Amazon, and often grow them only as annuals, chucking them out at the end of the season unless they prove exceptional then I might root prune etc..  so I think Adrian would be a better option for advice... hope that's ok with you..

...this is another area I don't really do.. that is climbing roses in pots around a front door... it's too difficult and time consuming with the watering etc. and I only recommend what I know and have grown... there may be some people on the main Roses forum who grow climbing roses in pots, but this really isn't my thing to do...  what I would suggest though, is to grow shrub roses by your front door in minimum 45 x 45cm pots, ones that can be kept to about 4 foot... Jude the Obscure and Eustacia Vye both have a great scent...   I have Vanessa Bell, about that height and width...  anything larger is too bothersome for me...  hope that's ok with you too...and thanks for the question..

  • Hi Malorena, I am looking at ordering Souvenir de St. Annes do you have or have you grown her ?

...Yes I do, but it's only in the first year in my current garden.  From what I know it should grow to 5 or 6 foot with time and patience,.. it is richly fragrant, semi single flowers, and the scent very much comes from the stamens, not the petals..
    ..it blooms continuously into autumn...

..the blooms don't last long in heavy rain, but it produces so many that there are always more to follow..  loves the sun and heat...

...worth a try?... I hope so..

Thank you for your reply @Marlorena.  I meant to post this on the other roses thread and obviously did it here by mistake so I will ask on there too.  I do have Eustacia Vye ordered so if nothing else is suitable then I have a spot for her to go.
  • Thanks Marlorena hopefully should get delivery end of next week

...I don't want you to be left in the lurch, so to speak, so I tell you what, if you can show me a photo of your area you want the rose to climb, and the pot you will be growing it in, with an indication of what colour rose you prefer, I can probably put something together for you …
