I have suggested the OP seeks professional advice and refer everyone to my initial post

I've never seen any of them eat anything other than grass and they're old enough now not to just munch everything. I'll decide whether it's going in the ground or pot then go from there and supervise to make sure they're not taking an interest in it. Thank you

Our Hosta is just starting to flower. It does seem to get decimated by snails later in the year.

Got a drinking gourd hosta from a local nursery (very local only 1 mile) big plant in a 5 litre pot £7.50 total bargain. All my hostas are doing great still no slug damage despite no precautions being taken, think it's the hedgehog and an army of thrushes and blackbirds that are doing the business

Hello @Hostafan1 @Dovefromabove and everyone, newbie here. I have really enjoyed reading the thread, and looking with envy at your lovely hostas. Hope you don't mind me butting in.

I would like to have a hosta in a pot to fill the shaded spot between my north-facing porch and house. Can I ask some stupid questions?
    1. It gets no direct sun. Would that be OK?
    2. I am looking for an example that will eventually reach about 1m wide to fill the dead space. I love the blue ones, and also the variegated like June Fever, Patriot, and Fire and Ice. Would any of these fit the bill? Any other recommendations?
    3. What size pot? Suppose I buy one in a 2l pot - should I pot it on into something about twice the size and then keep repotting every year, OR put it into the final large pot straight away?
    4. What potting medium? MPC? JI no 3?

Thanks so much, and sorry for mini-essay!

Slugs or snails  have been appreciating my hostas but I can't find them ( not the hostas)
    In London. Keen but lazy.

Hi @Pianoplayer and welcome aboard 😊

The blue hostas are the ones that need the most  protection from the sun so that’s what Id put in your spot. I think Hadspen’s Blue would be perfect there ... mine isn’t troubled by molluscs 🤞 and is a glorious colour and the right sort of size.

and there’s a picture of mine on a previous page.

@Hostafan1 will have some other suggestions I’m sure, when he gets back from work this afternoon.

Yes, I’d pot on each spring in a mix of John Innes No2 loam-based compost with some added garden compost or soil conditioner, leaf mould or MPC.

@Pianoplayer, I don't think any of those varieties you mention will fill out to 1m wide very quickly.
As @Dovefromabove, Hadspend Blue is a good one, also look at Big Daddy and Blue Angel. I'd put them in nice big pots , about 18inch diameter by about a foot deep, or bigger if you have one, / budget to buy one.

@Dovefromabove @Hostafan1 Many thanks for the advice and suggestions. I will try and track down one of the varieties you've mentioned.
