Good thread. I had some good replies on this too:

I made a start today, so feeling pleased.

Maybe better to grow your spuds in bags or tub trugs, Tinpot?
Just remember to water them well - as they grow the leaves get very dense and the soil dries out - so grow them somewhere close to your tap. Carrots, on the other hand, might be perfectly happy in amongst the lavender - I've never tried it but they're a better match.

  • And the obvious thing to grow is some cut and come again salad leaves, many mixes to choose from and quick to harvest...can even look quite decorative if a mix of different colours and textures. Can go for spicier varieties or a mix of bitterness and sweetness.

Okay, so my tatties have arrived so I put them out for chitting:

Unfortunately my wife filled the shed with all sorts over the winter making it all but unusable now in the spring 😂 hence the mess!

Do you have any module trays?  I start my onion sets off in those in the greenhouse (24 to a tray) and plant them out once they have rooted (which only takes a week or so.)  Doing that prevents birds pulling them out by the tops.

I now have a huge pile of manure.  I collected two bags of comfrey leaves from the watermeadow near the Trent last Monday, it is now soaking in a dustbin of water. (feed for tomatoes. ) Nettles are soaking in another dustbin,( feed for brassicas.) We cleared a lot of ivy from the hedge, now we find that the brown bins for compostables are not going to be collected , so we might have to have a bonfire before I put the tatties in. I normally send ivy and bindweed to the council.  I replanted the sunflower seeds in the greenhouse, but only after we had two nights with no mice in the traps.  Onion seeds (Mammoth and mammoth red) were sown in roottrainers, they are now four inches high.  The slug pubs near the kale under the polytunnel are catching loads of small slugs. Better that than they grow up to be big slugs and breed.

My tomatoes are doing good. Still indoors. I have sowed chilli today. I will wait couple of days before sowing beans.

Sound sensible - I’ll look for egg boxes but I might have to “upcycle” some of the plastic boxes that aren’t being collected instead (!)

I wasn’t expecting quite so many onions in the bag  (or seed potatoes as it happens) , can some be held back and planted later in the year for a later crop?
