I had no idea this forum is busy when I posted in the Spring. Thanks for all the advice regarding the black spot. I tried regular (well once a month) feeding with seaweed or rose feed or blood fish and bone. Coupled with making sure there was some airflow. It seems much better this year. I do habitually try and clear the leaves and mulch in the autumn. But this year am going to try a thicker layer of home compost. Fingers crossed.
It’s really inspirational to see all the different roses and approaches!
Good to know Alexander holds it’s colour @Tack, I am looking forward to that one. I think that’s right @poppyfield64, one has to have a balance and different roses for different qualities, since it’s rare to get everything in one package.
@edhelka, Spanish Amazon doesn’t have the Pro at all and ebay is fairly underdeveloped but I will check it out, thanks. I guess Scotts miracle grow slow release granules at 17-9-11 + magnesium and trace elements/lasts up to 6 months would probably do a similar job at 5.99 a kilo!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
I have a question about bare roots. A few of us are expecting quite a few bare roots in November. What are your plans for them? I plan to put in pots first for a couple of years but one of them I have a spot picked out in the garden. Should I still pot it first and let it get more established or put it straight in the ground?
@poppyfield64 I do both. Lot of work for October/November, so I try to do some preparation now. The plan is:
Old roses - pot to ground - 6 Old roses - ground to pot - 5 Old roses - ground to ground (move) - 1 Old roses - pot to pot (repot) - 1 Old roses - shovel pruning - 6 New roses - to pot -7 New roses - to ground - 8
Good question @poppyfield64, I was thinking I'd plant mine first into the green DA pots but was going to ask if this was a good idea. Big pots will be my main Christmas request and then I'd have enough for everything.
I have really cut my order down. None of mine will be shovel pruned. One will be moved from pot to ground, 2 from ground to pots, 3 need moving to bigger pots. Easy this year!
You've certainly got your work cut out for you @edhelka. So when you shovel prune do you actually bin them totally?
Most of mine will be staying put for this winter apart from 4 that need re-potting into bigger pots. 4 of my new ones coming will go into pots and 1 in the ground which I still need to prepare.
This is my order so far plus I have added Golden Wings to this order and this is the one I want to put in the ground.
I am getting rid of two inherited no-ids which were in temporary pots for this season (with the plan to bin them after the season), one of my front garden no-id HTs, Just Joey, assumed The Lady Gardener and probably Scepter'd Isle (I am considering planting it in a smallish pot for one more season and decide later). Yes, I'll bin them, with the exception of Just Joye which will be rehomed. If anyone here wants The Lady Gardener (or whatever it is), I can rehome her too, it has a good number of thick canes. The front garden HT is a nice plant too. Scepter'd Isle isn't in a good shape (one cane broken, one with canker, the rest weak).
